8th Grade Cluster Mathematics

1st Semester 2015-2016

Course Description

The 8th grade mathematics curriculum prepares our students for high school math and focuses on solving word problems, probability, exponents, linear equations, inequalities, algebraic expressions, functions, relations, geometric transformations, congruence, and systems. The textbook used for this class is Glencoe Math, Course 3, Vol. 1-2 published by Glencoe McGraw Hill.

Course Objectives

The student will:

• Use and apply geometric properties of plane figures

• Explore angle relations created with parallel lines cut by transversal

• Use formulas for volume of cones, cylinders, spheres to solve real world problems

• Extend properties of real numbers to include irrational numbers

• Distinguish between rational and irrational numbers

• Perform operations with scientific notation

• Interpret square roots as both points and lengths

• Compute and estimate square roots of whole numbers (including 0)

• Simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions containing integer exponents and square roots

• Use exponents in applications such as scientific notation and the Pythagorean Theorem

• Graph functions & compare functions represented in various ways

Course Requirements

The student will:

1. Bring pencil, wide ruled paper, binder, book, whiteboard marker (Dry-Erase) & whiteboard eraser, and student planner to class daily. NO PENS, please.

2. Complete class assignments and copy all board work.

3. Complete homework assignments, showing all work. (HW will be routinely assigned Monday – Thursday.)

4. Be responsible for obtaining and completing assignments missed when absent.

5. Schedule tutoring sessions as needed. Tutoring is available every morning in the 8th grade computer lab from 7:30-8:15.

Course Evaluations

The student’s grade will consist of:

|45% - Major Assessments – Unit Tests, Benchmark Exams, Final Exams, Major Projects, Performance tasks, etc. |

|40% - Minor Assessments – Quizzes, Minor Projects, Minor Writing Assignments, etc. |

|15% - Process Grades – Class participation, Classwork, Homework, Signed Papers, etc. |

Students should work hard to maintain a high quality of work in all that they do, and be sure that the quality of their work is commensurate with their ability. Please sign the bottom of this page indicating that you have read the course syllabus and that you are aware that your child must maintain an 85, as a minimum grade, to remain in the Cluster Math class.
