Global competitiveness and intra-organizational knowledge sharing in global companies is facilitated by the use of computer-mediated communication to create various networks. Cross-cultural communications are likely to be more complex than those within a society, beginning with the choice of media. Each type of media has different characteristics, and the reasons why individuals choose one media over another are not clear, despite significant amounts of previous research. Understanding the rationale behind media choices can help in designing information and communication technologies to suit global business. The issue of concern is: Does cultural variation help explain media choice? We are exploring the implications of cultural variation to clarify some of the reasons for different media choices for similar tasks across cultures.

We are attempting to gather US (various locales) and international data for this project. The study consists of 25 scenarios given in questionnaire form, as well as demographic and similar questions, to at least 250 nurses, technical managers (e.g., laboratory, radiology, social work, physiotherapy), or physicians working in a hospital setting in your local. [For the study to have validity, we will need between 150 and 200 valid responses to each question.] These same 25 scenarios, although with a different set of questions, as well as demographic and similar questions, are given to 20 different nurses, technical managers (e.g., laboratory, radiology, social work, physiotherapy), or physicians working in a hospital setting in your local, which we will consider to be ‘judges.’ [For the study to have validity, we will need all 20 judges’ questionnaires completed.]

Once you have collected the responses, we will send an Excel (Microsoft Office) spreadsheet for data entry. These responses are put into the spreadsheet by you or your assistant, and then returned to us. We will analyze the data and compare it to the other locales we have gathered.

In return for your assistance, you will be an author of any paper we write using your data. We plan, for a beginning, to submit a theoretical presentation at the Academy of Management conference to be held in August 2005 in Hawaii, USA. As you know, this is our premier Management conference. In addition, we will be writing empirical presentations for various Management, Communications, and Information Sciences conferences in future. We are expecting several major papers from this research, to be submitted to outlets such as Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, and Management Information Systems Journal. At this point in time, no funding is available for the project.

We would be pleased to have you join us in this endeavor. Please correspond, at your earliest convenience, with:
