Historical understanding and cultural literacy are essential for success in our increasingly global world. To this end, the 9th grade Regents Global History and Geography course has been structured to develop critical thinking, analytical and writing skills by exploring the scope and depth of the human experience over several thousand millennia. Global 9 200 is the first half of the two-year course sequence in Global History and Geography as outlined by the New York Sate Department of Education. Upon completion of Global 9 200 students will enter 10th grade and go on to study the second half of Global History and Geography. At the completion of study in this course, students will take the Global History and Geography Regents exam, a requirement for graduation from Bay Shore High School.

A strong work ethic, effective time management and organizational skills are essential for success. We progress rapidly through curriculum; it is imperative for students to remain current with coursework. The required reading and assignments will be distributed in class and posted on the class website as far in advance as possible so that students may be kept current on classwork in the event of an absence. As a high school student electing to either continue a course of study in college or move on to a successful career beyond high school, it is YOUR responsibility to remain current with all course-work. The address for the course website is written:

I understand that the transition from middle school to high school can be difficult for students and I am committed to providing the support necessary for each student to succeed.

Writing Requirements

1. Successful completion of thematic and DBQ essays assigned each quarter

2. Additional written assignments, to be completed in paragraph form, given as needed

Vocabulary

Some of the text and supplemental readings for this course are written for a collegiate audience and may prove challenging. In an effort to understand difficult vocabulary, students are encouraged to obtain a college level dictionary for use at home and in the classroom to mitigate this difficulty. In addition, students will be expected to maintain a log of all terms with which they are not familiar in a MARBLE NOTEBOOK, as well as the corresponding definitions. The vocabulary log will be collected and assessed the final week of each quarter. Students should define and type no fewer than 50 content-based terms for the first quarter and 100 terms each subsequent quarter. The terms students select must come directly from the text, class discussions and supplemental readings. This exercise will help you tremendously as you continue to grow as a writer, and prepare for the SAT.

1. Terms should be numbered and kept in a MARBLE NOTEBOOK labeled in the following manner:

GLOBAL HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY TERMS

Your Name

Class , Period and Teacher

2. Students are required to note the origin of the term in parenthesis.

3. Students are welcome to staple multi-page reading assignments into their notebooks to be included with their vocabulary assignments. This is for your protection and to ensure that assignments are not misplaced when collected or returned.

Sample Vocabulary Log Entry

1. Neolithic (Text page 13) of, relating to, or denoting the later part of the Stone Age, when

ground or polished stone weapons and implements prevailed

Full credit for this assignment will not be awarded for incomplete or hastily prepared vocabulary lists.

Class Procedures

Beginning Class- You are expected to be in your assigned seat BEFORE the bell rings. If you arrive late you are required to sign and date the late log located in the front of the room. According to the Bay Shore High School attendance policy each late arrival will count as ¼ of a class absence. Exceeding 18 absences in a full-year course will result in revocation of course credit. You must begin each day by opening your notebook, submitting assignments, copying the aim, and participating in the “do now” exercise.

End of Class: Class does not end with the bell. Students must remain seated until the class is dismissed by the teacher.

Pass Procedure: Student bathrooms and the drinking fountain are located directly across the hall from our classroom. Please use bathroom before the bell rings and within the first 5 min of the period. Only use the hall pass when absolutely necessary. YOU MAY NOT USE THE BATHROOM AFTER CLASS BEGINS. This is too disruptive to the educational process.

Notebook: Students are required to maintain a neat and organized notebook. You must use a three ring binder ( preferably 3”). Please remember that I will collect and grade your vocabulary log at the end of each quarter.

Participation: Students are encouraged to participate actively in class discussions by raising their hands. This will increase comprehension of course material and assist in the development of the skills necessary for success at the secondary and collegiate level.

Homework: Homework is an essential component of the course and must be submitted on time. Since you are given advance notice of all assignments late homework assignments will not be accepted! Each homework assignment is numbered sequentially. Students must complete a proper heading and record the homework number at the top of the page prior to submitting. It is not possible to excel in this course if you choose to not complete your homework.

Unit Outline: Students are required to complete a detailed hand written outline of assigned textbook reading for each unit of study. The outline will count as 80 quarter points and will be collected the day of a scheduled unit exam. Students are encouraged to use the basic outline format detailed on the last page of this document. Outlining chapters of study will enhance comprehension of challenging course material, promote effective record keeping, and ultimately provide students with an invaluable resource when preparing for exams. Students may submit chapter outlines one to five days late for a 20% point reduction. Assignments more than one week late will receive a 50% point reduction.

Tests: Unit and cumulative exam questions correspond directly to assigned reading, note sheets and class assignments. Students are notified well in advance of assessments. Unit topics lists are available in class and on the class website. Students are advised to prepare for exams regularly.

What Do I Do When I Am Absent? When you cannot attend class we will miss you and anxiously await your return. ( It is your responsibility to check the assignment folders at the front of the classroom for course documents and to submit all missing work. If you do not submit missing assignments grades are recorded as zeros.

Extra Help: I am available for extra help only in the mornings, due to my split schedule with the Middle School. I will be in the building periods 1-3 most days, if you need to speak with me. Mr. McKenna is available for extra help in my absence most days from 2:00 to 2:30.
