Check out the clothes you’re wearing. Where was the last movie you watched filmed? What about the music you listen to? Travel, family, internet friends – so many connections all over the world. What issues affect all of us on the planet? Global warming, air and water pollution, sicknesses like SARS or AIDS; nuclear weapons; terrorism, issues of poverty such as housing, education, gang violence and child soldiers... The list goes on. Are there any solutions to these problems? Many different organizations work on world issues. They are called NGOs (non-governmental organizations). Many Canadians are involved in some way in these groups. They help by donating money, writing letters, supporting boycotts, or by writing to Canadian politicians to express their ideas and opinions and to encourage our government to address the issues. Some volunteer time and energy to support projects, and many are currently working on these issues in other countries.
