Dear Parents and Guardians,

As a parent or guardian of a student currently enrolled in a Global History II or Advanced Placement World History course, you are receiving this letter to notify you of the changes to the Global History and Geography Regents examination your student is scheduled to take in June.

Unlike previous Global History and Geography Regents exams, your student will be evaluated on one year’s worth of content instead of two, specifically the content from their current Global History II course. The examination, referred to as the Transition Global History and Geography Regents, will be based on world history from the year 1750 to the present. Please note, however, that students will still use the social studies skills and their knowledge of world geography introduced in their Global History I classes on the test and can even use historical information prior to 1750 as extra information in the essays on the exam.

Due to the change in content specifications on the exam, students will also have a decreased amount of multiple choice questions, changing from a total of fifty questions to thirty.  Students will still be required to complete both a thematic essay and a document-based essay on their exam. Although there fewer multiple choice questions, the multiple choice portion of the exam will still be 55% of a student’s Regents examination grade, thus making each multiple choice question higher in point value. As this is a new exam, the exam date scheduled by New York State is earlier in June to allow for data collection in order to create an accurate scoring grid. The Transition Global History and Geography Regents is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5th at 8 a.m. As with other final exams, students will be provided transportation to and from the exam and a bus schedule will be available prior to the examination.  Although the Global History and Geography Regents is earlier in June than usual, students will not be notified of their scores until their final report cards. Please remember that attendance on June 5th is mandatory for all students currently enrolled in a Global History II or Advanced Placement World History course, as the Global History Regents is the final exam for both courses and required by New York State for high school graduation.

In order to prepare for the new Transition Global History and Geography Regents examination, Arlington High School Global History II teachers have put together a variety of resources and review opportunities for students. Your student will receive a review plan from their individual Global History II teacher in the near future. Also, please visit the Arlington High School Social Studies webpage on the Arlington High School website for additional materials, information and resources.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact either your student’s Global History II teacher or me directly at the contact information listed below.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kathleen M. Bellino

Social Studies Coordinator
