Downtown disrepair disappoints business owners

continued from front He also pointed out that the flowers around the trees along James Street, one nice addition to the downtown, were purchased and planted by the Downtown Business Association (DBA), not the municipality. Martha Childerhose, town Operations Department administrative assistant said a number of Mr. McNaughton's pictures don't depict what the areas look like this week. "That is part of ongoing maintenance, as far as the trimming of the weeds is concerned," said Ms Childerhose. "Council did ask that one-third (of maintenance funding) be cut from the budget. That kind of stuff is part of regular maintenance by students and staff." Ms Childerhose said she was unable to say whether the poor conditions of those areas was specifically related to the budget cuts. "Without knowing the whole story, I can't assume that," she said. Ms Childerhose said the town is going out to the areas in Mr. McNaughton's pictures to investigate. Jeans Unlimited owner Sue Sullivan said Mr. McNaughton makes a valid point about the condition of the downtown. "I drove by the town office the other day and I noticed they don't even put out any plants or anything," said Ms Sullivan. "The garden hasn't even been attended to since last year. And I've heard the same thing from other people. How many people go in and out of there everyday and see that?"

Ms Sullivan said she has to give credit to DBA administrator Heather

Steele who she spotted doing her part on Saturday.

"She really tries," said Ms Sullivan. "I saw her out at (the former)

Snapshots taken by Whiskeyjack owner Doug McNaughton around the downtown area show an overgrown patch of grass just outside the town office, as well as the office's garden, a street lamp swarmed with weeds and a cracked slab of concrete on James Street.

pulling weeds. I just get the impression (council) doesn't care about the downtown. I really thought with this new council things could only get better, but it's actually gotten worse. We're a tourist town and council cancelled the Logging Days Festival, because they couldn't afford the $15,000 (to host the event). Well, how much did it cost for the survey to tell them that town (operations department) staff is unhappy? These issues need to be addressed."

Town councillor Paul Borneman said he was certain if anyone looked hard enough they would

be able to see some disrepair within the downtown. "There is a maintenance schedule followed within the town and things like cracked sidewalks

follow a life cycle management plan and are repaired on a priority basis - the worst repaired first," said Mr. Borneman. "I'm not making excuses, but the Operations Department has been busy this summer with the Gibson Street project and other major projects. As well, we've trimmed money from the budget and have done the best we can with what we have." Mr. Borneman went on to say that the town has supported the DBA this year, giving it funds so it may beautify the downtown as it sees fit. "Is it perfect? No," said Mr. Borneman. "I am confident we've been cooperative with (the DBA) helping them improve the downtown. I don't think there's a magic wand or a money tree, it takes time to improve certain things. Also, council has put its' money where its mouth is by putting $100,000 into the facade improvement plan to assist business owners in improving the look of their business."
