Many courses have a particular day, week or month where their members expect total perfection.

Grinding

JRM's Elite super-thin bedknives provide zero tolerance for bruising, which is music to a superintendent's ears.

The Elite super-thin bedknives for Toro? (4TPB18 and 4TPB22), John Deere? (4JDPB18 and 4JDPB22) and Jacobsen? (4JPB18 and 4JPB22) will leave your

greens looking immaculate and allow you to achieve the lowest possible cut without dragging or scuffing.

While not built for longevity, the quality of cut is far superior to anything else on the market.

The bedknives can also cut as low as .050".

These thin bedknives are slightly different from your standard bedknife during the set-up phase. They are engineered with a 0 degree deck height, or

top-face angle. With a bedknife this thin, precision grinding is at a premium.

Step 1: Mount bedknife to your bed bar then set it up to your grinding stone.

Step 2: When grinding this bedknife the top face angle should be indicated anywhere between 1 and 3 degrees, or whenever you begin to scratch with consistent friction from end to end.

Step 3: When you achieve a consistent friction across the top face you should begin grinding. It should take no more than a few passes to get them configured with your bed bars tolerances.

Step 4: During touch up please keep the same angle of your initial grind. You may feel the need to backlap these bedknives to prolong longevity. That is a non-issue, but please remember to use a fine grit compound (180+).

These super-thin bedknives also work very well with the JRM Vulcan Grinding Wheel. Our grinding stones are well-known for their cool grinding characteristics and will relieve a lot of stress on the bedknife when grinding.

Bedknife Grind Angles

Bedknife grind angles--The top face and front face grind angles listed on our bedknife pages are the angles that the JRM DURANIUM-801? greensmower, fairway and high-cut bedknives will feature coming out of the box. You can run our bedknives as is and get a quality cut, but that is not set in stone. Maintenance Technicians can grind to a personally preferred angle through their years of experience or follow an OEM specification. Although that is not necessary, it won't affect the life of a JRM bedknife provided you don't grind too much off the front face.

The top face angle combines with the front face angle to create the actual cut point, and it provides clearance for the clippings to eject after a blade of grass has been cut. The top angle is also important in eliminating metal-to-metal contact across a wide-range of bedknife attitudes.

The front face angle is important for allowing the reel to present the grass to the bedknife to be cut. If there is no front angle on the bedknife, the bedknife tends to push the grass forward making it difficult for the grass to be properly cut.

Regular bedknife maintenance practices like front facing, backlapping etc. are critical in extending the life of a bedknife. The quality of JRM's cutting edge is what stands it apart from all competitors. JRM's unique steel and coining process allow for several more grinds than most of its competitors.
