Nairn Academy

IntroductionThis document outlines our key plans, and provides detail as far as possible as to what these would mean for pupils and parent / carers. The New Year has begun with a new lockdown, but we are now in a stronger position than we were in March. We know that virtual learning with some interaction and feedback are key for engaging our pupils and that wellbeing is of central importance. Structure, clarity and regular communication must be priorities.Virtual Learning Timetabling The first two terms of this session have re-engaged many youngsters with school successfully, and we would envisage that now learning is established, it would benefit learners to try and use timetables to provide structure to their days and their studies. RegistrationPupils register online via Registration Google Classrooms between 9.20 and 9.40am. Register teachers have created classes, and set a daily assignment to register. Pupils click “submit/mark as done” in order to register. A video clip has been prepared to support you with this process: pupils who do not attend and whose parent /carers have not emailed the school to notify us of an absence will receive absence texts.Register staff are online from 9.20-9.40am to deal with any queries that may arise and will re-direct these on via email. Register notices will be read “live” weekly, and this allows for virtual assemblies as appropriate. The School DayTimetables are simplified to double periods to maximise learning over a two-week repeating cycle (as below). This is in response to pupil feedback during the last period of lockdown where many pupils were overwhelmed with the volume of work posted and how they coordinated the completion of work across a number of subjects.9.20-9.40am9.45-11.25am11.45-1.20pm2.00-3.45pmWeek One: 11/1/21, 25/1/21RegistrationP2 subjectP4 subjectP6 subjectWeek Two: 18/1/21RegistrationP3 subjectP5 subjectP7 subjectWork continues to be shared via Google Classrooms. Staff will post reminders in the Classroom Stream of when classes are taking place.Departments may post work at the start of the week, but pupils are able to use their normal lesson times for completion of these tasks. Live Google Meet sessions with classes will be scheduled during some normal class times. There is an expectation that all classes will have some virtual teaching each fortnight, even if this is limited to a short block of teaching or a question and answer session, for example. To build in extra time for S1/2 pupils, PSU, Drama, NOW, and Digital Skills will not run during lockdown. Subjects scheduled p1 which do not show over the two-weekly timetable can post work which can be completed over the lessons freed up by removal of these plete the blank Timetable at the foot of this document using your own so you have a note of what you should be doing when. SupportPlans take into account the needs of targeted pupils and the use of identified PSAs and Learning Support teachers who can provide one-on-one or small group support sessions for particular tasks / pupils. We advise you to mute your mic and keep your camera off in Google Meets. Your teacher may give you the chance to contribute depending on the style of lesson and activity, but otherwise you can use the chat function to ask questions or answer. If you choose to have your camera on in Google Meets, ensure your background is de-personalised to maintain your privacy. You can select a background to use from the menu. Please ensure if you do use your camera that you are suitably dressed, and that if you use the mic, you are appropriate in what you say.Only use Classroom, Hangouts and Meets Chat function for the purpose of the learning and teaching.Be supportive and encouraging of your peers and staff who are working in a new and different way.Be aware that Google Meets may be recorded to be posted on Classrooms. Pupils and / or parent /carers must NOT attempt to record lessons either using Chromebooks or any other device. Senior Phase: SQAWe are awaiting updated guidance from the SQA on any further revision to arrangements for the assessment of National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses in the 2020–21 session. Please note that SQA advice will continue to develop, given the unpredictable nature of Covid. It is critical that pupils complete work on time and that all work is done to their best ability. Evidence of predicted attainment will be drawn from work completed during three assessment “windows”. Pupils should therefore organise work carefully and keep completed tasks, jotters and folders securely. Your Health and WellbeingWe all learnt more about how we learn and cope best with challenging situations in Spring, and we can use these lessons now. Plan to include time outdoors as part of your dayStick to a routine- try to go to bed and get up at reasonable timesPlan your learning- we have made guides about how to use Google Calendars and To-Do-Lists to help youAttend “live” any lessons and Google Meets- socialising and learning together is importantStay in touch with friends and familyDip into the mental health and wellbeing resources below: us when there is a problem. Contact guidance staff on the email addresses in the section below.Staying in Touch and Tracking ProgressThis year, we are adapting tracking and reporting to be Covid-proof. Our new calendar sees short online tracking reports shared more frequently with parent/ carers. This will facilitate greater communication with home, and ensure that our young people stay on track with their learning. Where required, staff can follow up with parent / carers via Google Meets. The next Senior Phase Tracking Report was due on the 18th January. This will be rescheduled to the week beginning 1/2/21 to allow for two full weeks of online learning to be reflected in staff comments. Dates of BGE tracking will follow and may be slightly amended from previously due to the current contextWe will continue to share information via our social media channels and send text alerts when important new information is posted. Our newsletters are also shared via these channels. All posts are also found on our website at nairnacademy..Access to school phones may be limited. In this case, please use the nairn.academy@.uk email address and we will direct your query on the relevant person. This may be under the guidance of public health, or if they develop symptoms. If your son/daughter is advised to self-isolate, learning and course materials can be accessed through Google Classroom, and they can liaise with teachers to plan their learning where they feel well enough to do so.Blended Learning As a school, we also have contingency plans for reduced timetables in case we need to adapt to tighter social distancing measures, or reduce the number of pupils in school. In these cases, pupils would attend on agreed days and continue with online learning, set tasks and revision activities at other times.
