undertaking a commitment to insuring bullying in all of its forms would not occur on its buses.

On November 26, 2012 at its annual training meeting, the driving staff were presented with sweater/hoodies to wear while they drove their buses.

The apparel had `Bully Free Zone' on the front and the message - `Bell Transportation does not tolerate any type of bullying behaviour on our buses' on the back.

Report bullying

The company's phone number is also on the back so that it may be used to report aberrant behaviour rather than directly to the driver, if the child was more comfortable doing so.

The drivers were instructed to continue to keep an eye out for this kind of inappropriate behaviour which is a normal and fundamental part of their duties, but to also note any change in attitude or behaviour among their riders that is seemingly outside of the normal personalities of the students. The drivers would report that back to the office and the parents or teaching staff might be followed up with to make sure everything is okay with that student.

On March 4, 2013 Whitestone school had an Anti-Bullying Day. There was discussion about what bullying is, how it can be directed at you and how to deal with it.

There was an assembly to

administer this information to the whole school and then later there was a screening of the film `Bully' for the older students.

In order to capitalize on the opportunity to reiterate the importance of the issue, Bell Transportation donated the documentary to the school, so that it may be viewed again in later years and become part of an anti-bullying learning tool as well as t-shirts depicting the same message as the driver's hoodies for the student body. The children were advised that as long as they had their shirt - they or their parents would always have the bus company's phone number to use if they were experiencing problems on the bus.

The driving staff has subsequently been given the same t-shirt so that they may

`wear the message' throughout the whole year.

It is Bell Transportation's hope that this endeavour has provided some measure of comfort for everyone and initiated some dialogue about the topic and could therefore be deemed a success.

Regardless the hoodies and t-shirts will remain in circulation and hopefully keep the message as current and relevant as possible.

The Bell Transportation driving staff will continue to be encouraged to be as aware as possible to helping protect the children and providing not just safe transport but a safe haven for the students.

Don't forget West Nile virus protection

PARRY SOUND - You can protect yourself from West Nile virus (WNv) by reducing pools of water where mosquitoes like to breed. When you are outside doing your yardwork, remember to drain water regularly from old tires, plastic containers, wading pools, wheelbarrows and clogged rain gutters. Change the water in birdbaths weekly and put screens on rain barrels to keep mosquitoes out.

For more information about WNv and your health, call Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or visit .
