6th Grade Math General Course Syllabus 2017-2018

OVERVIEW

In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Students in Grade 6 also build on their work with area in elementary school by reasoning about relationships among shapes to determine area, surface area, and volume. They find areas of right triangles, other triangles, and special quadrilaterals by decomposing these shapes, rearranging or removing pieces, and relating the shapes to rectangles. Using these methods, students discuss, develop, and justify formulas for areas of triangles and parallelograms. Students find areas of polygons and surface areas of prisms and pyramids by decomposing them into pieces whose area they can determine. They reason about right rectangular prisms with fractional side lengths to extend formulas for the volume of a right rectangular prism to fractional side lengths. They prepare for work on scale drawings and constructions in Grade 7 by drawing polygons in the coordinate plane.

THE GRADING SYSTEM

The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

ELL

*English Language Learners (ELLs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ELL courses.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

Family involvement is an essential element for a student’s success in mathematics. Be positive and support homework, don’t do it for them. Think of yourself as a guide rather than your child’s teacher. You can help by asking questions and listening. You may also help by visiting the online resources and encouraging your child to take advantage of the tutorials, interactive activities, and other online resources listed above. For those without home web access, check with your child’s classroom teacher or the middle school library.

STUDENT PROGRESS

Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine, and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester.  The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook.

HOMEWORK

Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience.  Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience.  Homework assignments will be primarily given through Khan Academy website for students to practice and master concepts. Homework assigned through Khan Academy will be due on Thursday Evenings.

REMIND

Remind is a free text messaging app that helps teachers, students, and parents communicate quickly and efficiently. In our class we will use the Remind platform as an open forum for discussion about concepts or individual assignment discussed in class or any misconceptions or confusions about any concept or assignment. For all other inquiries not related to instruction, please send me an email.

Our Remind code: @mathgary

Instructions on how to sign up for remind can be accessed from our class website mathwithgary.

KHAN ACADEMY

This year, we’ll be using Khan Academy in class to personalize learning for all students!

Khan Academy is a free online resource that allows students to learn anytime, anywhere, with material that is uniquely appropriate for them. Students can explore new topics and strengthen their math skills by using interactive practice and tutorials. As students learn, their activity feeds into reports that show important information such as strengths and weaknesses in a particular concept. By using Khan Academy, I’ll be able to provide a more personalized learning experience for your child.

If you want to see how your child is learning on Khan Academy, I encourage you to create your own Khan Academy account as well. You’ll be able to see what your child is working on, and there’s plenty of material on the site for you to learn anything you want, too. Simply go to and click Sign Up to get your own account.

TUTORIAL

Math Tutorials are held Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in the computer lab (Room 306 or 411) for students who need additional support. Please take advantage of all tutorial opportunities. Tutorial sessions should be taken seriously. Students will be required to SIGN IN using the tutorial book once they arrive at tutorial.

Tutorial will consist of the following options:

• Working on the concepts/skills through Khan Academy with homework, classwork assignments, and notes.

• Test or Quiz Corrections.

• Test or Quiz Make-ups.

MAKE-UP WORK DUE TO ABSENCES

When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. Students will retain missed work from the while you were out section of the classroom. Students will be given one class day from the day they return to submit missed assignments. See Board Policy IHEA.

PREPAREDNESS

Students are expected to come to class prepared every day with notebook, folder, paper, and pencil. Bringing the list of materials, all assignments completed, and a willingness to learn and participate is crucial for success.

THE THUMB SYSTEM

In this classroom, we use a thumb system in which students determine their level of confidence in the lesson. We have three different methods that we use to represent their progress:

▪ Thumbs Down- Not Understanding anything that is going on in the lesson.

▪ Thumbs to the Side- I understand some parts of the lesson, but there are other concepts in which I am still confused.

▪ Thumbs Up- I completely understand today’s lesson and have mastered the concept.

Students should use the thumb method that corresponds to how they are feeling about the lesson each day to meet their needs and ensure academic success.

RESTROOM/HALL PASSES

Students are expected to use the 5-minute transition time to use the restroom or go to their lockers. During the FIRST 15 minutes and the LAST 15 minutes of class, students are not allowed to leave the classroom. Students are not permitted to leave the classroom except for legitimate reasons. Students will not be given restroom passes constantly. Each student will be required to sign in and out using our location log notebook in addition to the pass that will be given to them.

CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS

1. Be on time, on task and prepared to learn EVERYDAY.

2. Respect the teacher, the classroom, other students and yourself.

3. Be responsible for your own learning.

4. Clean up after yourself and your peers.

5. Keep all personal electronics PUT AWAY unless given permission for instructional purposes or with restrictions.

6. Do not enter the teacher’s area or touch/grab ANYTHING from the teacher’s desk.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES/PROTOCOL
