Course Description:

NC Math I (HS Credit)

This course is an accelerated math course that offers the last half of eighth grade standards along with all standards associated with the first high school credit course. This course is open to those students who have already completed Common Core Math 7 Plus. Math I provides students the opportunity to study concepts of algebra, geometry, functions, number and operations, statistics and modeling throughout the course. These concepts include expressions in the real number system, creating and reasoning with equations and inequalities, interpreting and building simple functions, expressing geometric properties and interpreting categorical and quantitative data.

Materials/Notebook:

Organization is essential in order to have a successful year and will help to best prepare you for high school. I expect you to keep your work and math materials organized in a binder. The binder should be divided into sections. Sections need to include: vocabulary, resources/notes, homework, classwork, and projects. I will host several announced (and unannounced) notebook checks to make sure you are keeping track of all necessary items.

Materials Needed:

Students are expected to have the following supplies on a daily basis:

• Loose Notebook Paper

• Graph Paper

• 3 Ring Binder

• Subject Dividers

• Writing Utensils (Pencils, Highlighter, Colored Pencils, Markers)

• Graphing Calculator (RECOMMEND TI 84)

• Index Cards (1-2 Packs)

• Hand-held Pencil Sharpener

• Headphones (to use in computer lab)

• East Cary School Agenda is Required (Purchase from PTSA)

Optional Team Supplies

• Copy Paper

• Hand Sanitizer

• Kleenex

Communication:

• My website is updated daily noting homework, upcoming tests/quizzes, projects, videos, PowerPoints, and course documents (notes/handouts) whenever possible. The address is

Grading:

• Students will be evaluated in 3 areas: Major Assignments (50%), Intermediate Assignments (35%) and Minor Assignments (15%).

• Major Assignments include: Tests & Major Projects. Intermediate Assignments include: Quizzes, Weekly Math/Warm-Ups, and Unit Vocabulary. Minor Assignments include: Classwork, Homework, and Participation.

• Points will be deducted when an assignment is turned in after the due date.

• Please check PowerSchool weekly for updated grades.

• Please note that the final exam will count as 25% of the final grade at the end of the year.

Arriving to Class:

Before class begins, you should:

• Sharpen your pencil

• Sit in your assigned seat

• Take out homework

• If you enter after the door closes, you will be considered tardy. Unnecessary tardiness = silent lunch or other disciplinary action indicated by 2016-17 tardy policy.

Homework/Absent Work/Textbooks:

• If you are absent, you should check my website for missing work. You may print documents from home if you’d like, but a copy of any missed assignments will be waiting for you when you return.

• Complete the work within a reasonable amount of time and return to Mrs. Vincent.

• Make sure you are present on test day. If you are absent it is your responsibility to make up the test at the teacher’s discretion.

• We have classroom sets of textbooks, therefore students will not receive an individual book to bring to and from class.

Classroom Expectations:

1. Be respectful of your classmates, your teachers, and yourself.

a. Use polite speech and body language

b. Keep your hands and feet to yourself

2. Be in your seat, working on Warm-up, when the bell rings.

3. Do not eat or drink (other than water) in the classroom.

4. Do not use any electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, etc.) in the classroom (unless teacher specifies it is needed for class).

5. Come to class prepared to learn and willing to learn.

How to Succeed in this Class:

• Come to class every day with all needed materials and a POSITIVE ATTITUDE!

• Refrain from distracting behaviors and contribute to a positive classroom climate.

• Ask questions in class.

• Turn in all assignments on time.

• Always do your best!!
