2011-2012

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Welcome to a brand new year at Jean Childs Young Middle School where we have PRIDE! This means that our mission is to provide rigorous instruction to develop excellence for all children. With the leadership of Mr. Thomas Kenner, we plan to have a year more exciting and rewarding than ever before. You may already know that our school has made Adequate Yearly Progress for the fourth straight year in a row, but did you know that despite the low mathematics performance on the 8th grade CRCT across the state of Georgia, our school successfully met the system’s goals in mathematics? Now that we have established academies designed to meet the needs of each child, we hope this new structure will result in improvements that exceed our targets for this school year.

As in the past, we will continue to utilize the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) to guide our mathematics curriculum and provide students with more time for growth and mastery of algebraic concepts. Each child will be issued a textbook, workbook, and CRCT study guide published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, which contains a variety of activities, practice problems, and online tutorials to foster deeper mathematical understanding.

We expect all students to become successful problem solvers and develop a level of mastery in mathematics that exceeds the required minimum standard on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test. In order for these expectations to be realized, your support is needed to monitor your child’s progress and provide assistance where needed. Please read through the attached course syllabus, which gives you an overview of the GPS and expectations for the school year. If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact your child’s teacher or schedule a conference through the school counselor by calling 404-802-5900.

Thank you for choosing to educate your child at Young Middle School. We look forward to working together, and hope to greet you personally real soon!

Sincerely,

Mr. D. Johnson, EXCEL Academy
