Middle School Grade 8 Textbook; Online: my., Canvas, castleberrymath.Math 8: Math 8 provides students the foundations for Algebra I next year. We will cover the following topics:Real Numbers, Exponents and Scientific NotationProportional and non-proportional relationships and functionsSolving EquationsSolving Systems of EquationsTransformational GeometryMeasurement GeometryStatisticsClassroom Expectations:Be RespectfulListen when others speak.Use appropriate language.Keep inappropriate technology away.Be ResponsibleComplete your work with your best effort.Turn in assignments on time.Accept responsibility for your choices.Be on-time!Participate fullyBe ResourcefulFind and utilize resources.Ask questions.Find your own answers.Grading:Rubrics Weighted GradesQuizzes/Tests/Projects 70%Notebook Check 10%Assignments/Homework 20%Notebook Check–due at end of every unitSupplies: Pencils with erasersDaily Planner3-ring binder (1 to 1.5 inch)BOUND NOTEBOOK (no spirals!)Calculator (not all the time)Optional, but good to have:HighlightersColored pensFine tipped colored markersWe will focus on the following mathematical strands:Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world/mathematical problems.Apply/extend previous understanding of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers.Properties of operations to generate equivalent expressionsSolve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions/equations.Draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.Solve real-life and mathematical problems involved angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.Investigate chance, processes and develop, use and evaluate probability models.Assignments: I see assignments as practice. With practice, students should feel free to do their best, make mistakes and learn from them. Students will be given both in-class work as well as homework.Homework is typically due daily, however, I am trying something new this quarter: Flipped Learning. Students will be taking notes via videos made by Mrs. Castleberry, then will complete work/activities. Students will work mainly at their own pace; general due dates will be assigned. At the end of each week, assignments not turned in will receive a zero and will be considered late. Late work will be docked 20%. It is my hope that students who want to be more challenged and work at a faster pace will do so and those who need more one-on-one help will be able to have more. Students will be grading their own work individually and may ask the teacher questions when they arise. Notebooks are due at the end of each unit and include, notes, classwork, assignment (in order as on powerschool), quizzes, tests and projects. Quizzes/Tests/Projects:This tells me what you actually know and have learned.Quizzes are usually given weekly; Tests are given every 3 -4 weeks.Quiz/Test Corrections: Must finish your missing work FIRST, to be turned in with your quiz/test corrections.Must be done within 1 week & you must follow the Test Correction Procedure. You may earn up to ? the points back that you missed.Grading Scale: 90-100 = A80-89 = B70-79 = C60-69 = D Behavior/Discipline: Participate in a positive and active way. If you are choosing not to work or to distract yourself and others, you will be warned, have a discussion with me, have seat moved and/or be assigned lunch detention.2nd disruption, a phone call home will be made. 3rd disruption, an office referral will be submitted.Phones seen during class will be taken to the office. This IS your warning. No warnings during class.Other:No food or flavored drinks – water is great!LAST DAY TO SUBMIT LATE WORK FOR THE CURRENT UNIT WILL BE MAY 11TH, 201745853352540Work ScheduleMon: 12:30 – 4pmTues: 12 – 4pmWed: 9am – 1pmThurs: 10 – 4pmFri:8:30 – 2pm00Work ScheduleMon: 12:30 – 4pmTues: 12 – 4pmWed: 9am – 1pmThurs: 10 – 4pmFri:8:30 – 2pmMath 8Mrs. Castleberry2017 - 2018 Syllabus907-458-7600 Rm.206sunny.castleberry@Text & Resources: Go Math!
