Instructions: Listen to the following passage and answer the questions.

[pic]“Perry’s Pepper Pizza Parlor!” Perry said. “May I help you?” “Yes, I’d like to order a large pepper pepperoni pizza with hot peppers and green peppers,” said the lady on the other end of the phone.

“Is that all, ma’am?” asked Perry. “Yes, but please put the hot peppers on half the pizza and the green peppers on both halves.” “Also, I’d like the pepperoni on the hot pepper part but not on the green pepper part.”

“But didn’t you say you wanted the green peppers on both parts?” “That’s right,” the lady replied.

“That’s not possible!” Perry pronounced. “Why can’t I have green peppers on the whole pizza?” “I mean the pepperoni part.”

“I don’t see why pepperoni placement is so difficult,” the lady said. “But if that’s too much trouble, just put the pepperoni on the whole pizza!” she added impatiently.

Perry began to dream about early retirement. “I’m kind of confused,” he said in a shaky voice.

“No offense, sir,” the lady said, “but you do have a listening comprehension problem.” Perry sighed. “That will be twelve dollars and fourteen cents.” “Can you deliver my pizza? she asked.”

“Sure can. What’s your address?” “My address is 2165 Independence Street, two blocks from the drug store” said the lady. “I’ll be there in twenty minutes” said Perry. “Thanks for your order, ma’am” he added. “Thank you” the lady said.

Residents of southern Puerto Rico are trying to get used to high prices for gasoline. The average price for regular gas is $1.07 per liter, which is almost 30 percent higher today than it was 12 months ago. The lowest gas price in Juana Díaz right now is $1.02 per liter at the Texaco Station. The station manager, Don Luis, said the reason his gas is cheaper than other gas stations is that he bought a lot of gas two years ago at reduced prices, so he is passing his savings on to his customers.

The lines at the Texaco Station often run 10 to 20 vehicles long. The police have been here several times because cars block traffic on the main street. Don Luis said, “I tell people in line that the Exxan Station a block away is only $1.03, but they’d rather wait and save 4 cents. “It’s OK with me, of course. I don’t mind making money.”

A young man pumping gas said he had waited in line for 20 minutes. When asked why he didn’t go a block away where there were no lines, he said, “Every penny counts. When I bought this ’99 Ford, gas was only $0.37 a gallon, which was pretty cheap. So, even though I only get eight miles per gallon, I wasn’t paying that much to fill my tank. But today’s prices are killing me. Now I only drive to work and to the grocery store. I used to drive around the neighborhood just to show off my wheels. I can’t do that anymore!”
