Creation Prayer Labyrinth

Station 0: Nothing

Station Set-up: This station will be absolutely nothing. I’m thinking can we enclose a station with a black curtain of some sort. You can’t see in and you can’t see out. Black. There is a sign that simply says “press play.” It starts with:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty…empty…empty…nothing. In the beginning there was nothing. God created out of nothing. Take a few minutes to reflect on the idea that without God, we wouldn’t exist. No planet. No water. No sky. No animals or birds or fish. No you. Without God, you don’t exist.

Station 1: Holy Space

3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.

God separates the water and the earth. Take a few moments and meditate on the fact that God created the water and the soil. Run your fingers through the dirt. Feel the water on your hands. Mix the two together and make mud.

Station Set up: Station obviously needs a bucket of dirt/soil, a bucket of water, and a bucket to “create” mud pies. We could also have a loop of nature videos playing at this station as well. Paper towels to wipe hands afterwards.

Station 2 – Plants

11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

God created the plants, the shrubs, the vegetables, the fruits and the flowers. Take a moment to thank Him and join in the planting process. Plant a flower in the pot before you. However many groups there are, we could have that many pots.

Station Set Up: Pots, soil & flower seeds. Each group can take one back with them and place it in their youth room. Can we request that each group bring a package of flower seeds?

Station 3 – Animals

20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

Use the canvas provided to sketch a favorite animals. Try to choose an animal that is not yet represented on the canvas. Then take a moment and thank God for his creative genius and originality.

Station Set Up: Foam Board and easel with sharpies available.

Station 4 – Image Bearers

26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

You were made to reflect God. You were made in His image. Think about the following questions and write your thoughts in the journal before you.

What did God mean by rule over?

What did God mean by “I give you?”

Station Set Up: Journal/Pen

Station 5 – It Was Good

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Create a small earth using green and blue paint and a small Styrofoam ball. Carry this with you through the rest of the labyrinth to remind you that the earth is good.

Station Set Up: Small Foam balls/Green & Blue Marker.

Station 6 – The Curse

23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out…

Driven out of perfection. In the original design, there is no indication that there was disease, fighting, destructive weather, or anything bad. But we were banned because we sought after something more. Do we still fall into this wicked trap? Do we still long for more? What do we long for more of? Are we ever truly satisfied?

Read this proverb:

“give me neither poverty nor riches!

Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.

For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say,

“Who is the Lord?” – Proverbs 30:8, 9

Take a moment and reflect upon your life concerning the things that consume you and the things that you consume? What is it in your life that says to God, “What you’ve given isn’t enough?” Talk with God about this matter.

Station Set Up: Seats for Prayer. Maybe it would be cool if we actually had kneelers here.

Station 7 – The Noise

Stare at the television and enjoy the sounds of 21st Century America.

Station Set Up: Television if possible, but a large computer or laptop would work. This will play a video loop of commercials, tv shows, movies, political news, etc.

Station 8 – The Longing

21that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

Read the highlighted chapter from page 58 of “Creation Regained.” Contemplate the re-creation that we are a part of through Christ.

Station Set Up: Copy of “Creation Regained” Needed.

Station 9 – The Consumption

Hold your small earth in the palm of your hand. Begin to poke holes in it with your fingers. Destroy your earth and place it in the basket. This represents not God’s destruction but our own destruction of the earth.

Station Set Up: Pencils or other objects to poke the holes in the “globes.”

Station 10 – The Choice

What are you going to do with this information? What part will you play in creation returning to the Garden of Eden? Type your response to this experience in the document opened before you.

Station Set Up: Laptop or journal for the students to write their ideas.
