Introduction

Genesis 1–2 reveals the origin of the earth as God created the earth in six literal days and rested from His creative work on the seventh day, sanctifying it as holy and declaring His perfect creation as “very good.” At the end of chapter two we see God’s people, in God’s perfect place, under God’s sovereign rule, experiencing God’s abundant blessing.

Prayer Focus

Spend time considering God’s creative work in Genesis 1–2 which shows His complete authority over all things as well as His love for His creation. Praise God as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe and pray that He would help you understand how to live as His image–bearers in the world today.

Day One

Read Genesis 1 and 2, focusing on Genesis 1:1–2:3 — The 6 Days of Creation

1. According to Genesis 1:1–2, John 1:1–3, and Hebrews 1:1–2, who created the heavens and the earth?

2. How is the earth described in Genesis 1:2?

3. From verses 3–13, briefly summarize God’s creation on days 1–3 and how these days of creation remedied the formlessness of the earth.

4. From verses 14–31, briefly summarize God’s creation on days 4–6 and how these days of creation remedied the void.

5. Skim through Genesis 1 to note how many times God stated that His creation was good. Why is this significant?

Day Two

Read Genesis 1–2, focusing on Genesis 1:26–28 and 2:4–24 — The Creation of Man

1. According to Genesis 1:26, what did God purpose within Himself to do?

2. From Genesis 2:4–7, briefly describe the creation of Adam in your own words.

3. In verses 8–9, where did God place Adam, and how is that place described?

a. What were God’s instructions to Adam according to verse 15–17?

4. In verse 18, what surprising revelation does God make, and how does He remedy it in verses 21–23?

Day Three

Read Genesis 1–2, focusing on Genesis 1:26–29 — Mankind: Created in God’s Image

1. From Genesis 1:1 and 1:26, John 1:1–3, Colossians 1:16, and Hebrews 1:2, what foundational truth about God is revealed?

2. According to Genesis 1:26–28, how is mankind similar, yet different, than the rest of God’s creation?

3. Using a commentary or other Bible resource, what does it mean to be created in God’s image (vv. 26–27)?

a. What was God’s design for man’s relationship to the earth and animals?

2. According to Genesis 1:28–31, how were men and animals to receive their food? What does this imply about man’s relationship to God?

3. What did God establish in Genesis 2:23–25? What do these verses teach about this primary human relationship?

a. No matter what season of life you’re in, how can this truth strengthen you practically to live according to God’s plan in the world today?

Day Five

Read Genesis 1–2 — God’s Creation Rule and Blessing

1. According to Genesis 1:31, how did God describe His entire creation?

2. In Genesis 2:1–3, what did God do on the seventh day?

3. From Psalm 19:1–6, Psalm 115:3, and Romans 1:19–20, how is God’s character and work seen in creation?

4. In Colossians 1:15–23, how is Jesus described, and what relationship do these verses have to this week’s study?

a. How should a believer respond to this truth? How will you respond to this truth?

5. Reflecting on this week’s study and God’s greatness and His lovingkindness to His creation, write a brief prayer of thanksgiving to close out your time of devotion.
