I am the God who will never break My promises to you.”There is power in His name. The Bible speaks often of the power of the name of the Lord.1 Samuel 17:42-45David’s victory over Goliath happened in the name of the Lord.John 14:14Colossians 3:17There is protection in His name.Proverbs 8:10We can take refuge in the name of Jesus. There is provision in His name.John 16:23Anything we can sign Jesus’ name to, God the Father will give us.This does not mean anything that we sign our own names to or casually think we can rubber-stamp with God’s approval. There is praise in His name.Psalm 8:1Psalm 34:3HOW DO WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO NOT TAKE GOD’S NAME IN VANITY?What does the word “vain” mean?It is the Hebrew word “shav.”MeaninglesslyEmpty of contentCarelesslyThoughtlesslyIt has its root in the word “tempest” or “storm.”We need to teach our children to never use profanity. When we take God’s name in profanity, it shows two things:An empty headA wicked heart“Profanity is a feeble mind trying to express itself.”Matthew 12:34“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”A profane mouth shows a profane heart.Profanity is an insult flung into the face of God.Taking God’s name in profanity is needless and excuse-less and brings only judgment. We need to teach our children to be careful with our speech.Don’t use “second-hand” cursing. Many euphemisms and slang words are derived from phrases or words that take God’s name in vain.Another way to take God’s name in vain is through frivolity. This means to take God’s name carelessly or lightly.Ephesians 5:3-4“Foolish jesting” in this passage refers to little sayings or witticisms that include the name of God.God’s name is holy and should never be used lightly.God’s name is often used in vanity through hypocrisy.Isaiah 48:1Hypocrisy occurs when we do not live by the Name that we profess. Many parents may teach Sunday school or be in leadership in the church, but their lifestyle does not match what they say they believe.Children and teenagers recognize hypocrisy in their parents and often turn away from the church and from the Lord as a result.Matthew 7:22-23If we are going to live for God anywhere, we need to live for God in our homes. When we name the name of Jesus, we should do so in sincere belief, in word and in deed.We need to show our children that we honestly and sincerely love the Lord. When we pray in the name of Jesus, we should not simply forge His name to the end of the prayer. When we sing songs of praise and worship in church, we need to honestly and sincerely mean the words that we sing.HOW DO WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO TAKE GOD’S NAME IN VICTORY?When we teach our children to take God’s name in victory, then they will be less likely to take His name in vanity.Colossians 3:17 shows us how to take God’s name in victory. The last name for God given in the Bible is Jesus.“Jesus” means “Jehovah saves.”We need to teach our children to wear His name.Acts 11:26When we call ourselves Christians, we are wearing His name; Christ.2 Timothy 2:19When we wear His name, we must walk the talk.As Christians, we are not our own; we are bought with a price. We are bought by His blood that was shed to save us from our sins.We need to teach our children to share His name.Malachi 3:16God has three books. The book of revelationThis is the Bible. The book of redemptionThis is the Lamb’s Book of Life. The book of remembranceGod is writing down and remembering when we fellowship around His name. This is the character we want to build into our children. The fear of the Lord. When a person takes God’s name in vain it is because he does not fear the Lord. The greatest mark of character is the fear of the Lord. The beginning of knowledge is the fear of the Lord.A nation is on its last legs when it no longer fears the Lord.Proverbs 1:7Psalm 34:3Hebrews 10:25We need to teach our children the names of God.Some of the names of God include:Jehovah Tsidkenu - “The LORD, Our Righteousness”Jehovah Shalom - “The LORD, Our Peace”Jehovah Nissi - “The LORD, Our Banner”Jehovah Shammah - “The LORD who is present”Proverbs 23:7Psalm 9:10Talk about the name of the Lord. One with another. We need to teach our children to bear His name.Acts 5:40-42The name of Jesus is hated more than any other name on the face of the Earth. His name is also loved more than any other name. There is a concerted effort opposing the name of Jesus. We need not be ashamed of the One who died for us.CONCLUSIONTeach your children to bear the name of Jesus. To unfurl the banner. To march under the blood-stained banner of Jesus.Do not be ashamed of the one who died for you.Teach your children to wear the name of Jesus.Teach your children to share the name of Jesus.Philippians 2:9-11Do you know Jesus personally? If not, you can pray to Him today by asking Him to come into your life.Call upon Jesus today. Repent (turn) from your sins, and turn to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins, and acknowledge Him as Lord of your life.Romans 3:23Romans 10:9-10Romans 10:13Acts 16:31John 3:16 ................
