From “The Study Catechism” — Confirmation Version:

Q-123: What encourages us to pray each day?

A: The God who has adopted us as children is the God who encourages and commands us to pray. When we pray, we respond with love to that greater love which meets us from above. Before we enter into prayer, God is ready to grant all that we need. We may turn to God with confidence each day, not because we are worthy, but simply because of God’s grace. By praying we acknowledge that we depend on grace for all that is good, beautiful, life-giving, and true.

WORSHIP NOTES. The text to our first hymn appeared in 1828 and had 14 stanzas but no author’s name. Jospeh Barnby (1838-1896) composed “Laudes Domini” for the translated verses. The second hymn today was composed by Fred Pratt Green (1903-2000) whose hymn-writing career began after he retired as a Methodist minister. Jack Schrader, a minister in the Evangelical Free Church of American, penned the Communion text. Written on the first anniversary of Charles Wesley’s spiritual conversion, our concluding hymn originally had 18 stanzas. The German tune “Azmon” was composed by Carl G. Glaser in 1828. Lowell Mason arranged the tune which is used in conjunction with many other texts.
