Description: This is a rare opportunity to hear eyewitness accounts from three professionals who dealt first-hand with the aftermath of radiological accidents at Three-Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant (1979) and city of Goiania, Brazil(1987).

Presenters:

Dr. Peter Houts was a professor of behavioral science at Pennsylvania State University and in the five years immediately following the TMI accident performed a number of studies examining the psychosocial and emotional effects of the accident on the area population, especially pregnant women and mothers of young children. He is the author of "The Three Mile Island: Psychological, Social, and Economic Impacts on the Surrounding Population".

Dr. Jose Julio Rozental was Director of the Department of Nuclear Installation and Materials at the Brazilian National Commission of Nuclear Energy (NCEN) in 1987. He oversaw much of the Brazilian government response to the Goiania accident and will offer a unique and captivating account of the accident. Dr. Rozental retired in 1993 after 30 years of service at Brazil's NCEN and immigrated to Israel where he worked as Scientific Adviser at Radiation Safety Division, Ministry of Environment. Since 2001, he serves as consultant in radiation protection, safety, security and regulation for developing countries. Dr. Rozental visited Goiania this summer on the 20th anniversary of the accident where the psychosocial aspects of the 1987 accident are still evident.

Dr. Luiz Bertelli is currently an internal dosimetrist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and is involved in collaborative work with NCEH Radiation Studies Branch and Inorganic Toxicology and Radionuclide Laboratory. Dr. Bertelli was employed in Brazil in 1987 and served as the lead member of the radiation dose assessment team. Dr. Bertelli will describe the internal and external exposure scenarios to individuals, detailed aspects of individual monitoring and medical care of the victims including treatment with Prussian Blue. This should be of particular interest after the recent TOPOFF IV exercise.

This event will not be Envisioned. If you have any questions, please contact Armin Ansari (asa4@), Lynda Flage (lkf4@), or call the Radiation Studies Branch at 404-498-1800.
