ORLANDO, Fla., (May 7, 2009) -- With the economy lagging and daily stresses rising, avid golfers can find relief on some of the nation's best public-access courses. Ranked by state in Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play annual, all of these extraordinary courses are open to the public and many are offering exceptional prices in addition to alwaysamazing golf experiences.

"As someone who grew up playing munis and daily-fee tracks in and around the New York City area, it's an honor for me to work with Golfweek in presenting this annual list of Best Courses You Can Play," said Bradley S. Klein, national director of Golfweek's Best Courses rating program. "These layouts run the gamut, from fancy resorts like Pebble Beach and Pinehurst to really accessible, down-to-earth places like Wild Horse in Gothenburg, Neb., and Bully Pulpit in Medora, N.D."

In addition to listing each state's premier public-access courses, Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play features articles by Klein and Golfweek contributor Evan Rothman. Klein's article highlights the beauty of public-access courses while Rothman's piece outlines some of the country's greatest golf deals.

To create the Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play list, a nationwide team of more than 475 evaluators rated public layouts on the basis of ten criteria, including routing, conditioning, variety and memorability of holes. The number of courses per state varies on this list based on the course supply, population and level of play in each state.

"Since our first state-by-state listing in 2002, the popularity of Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play list has grown tremendously," said Terry Olson, vice president and publisher of Golfweek. "Serious golfers trust and utilize this list as a resource for identifying the best public courses."
