Biology 30S Research Project

Rationale:

• To help students improve their technical writing skills.

• To provide students with an opportunity to improve their research and word processing skills.

• To give students a chance to learn more about a specific disease affecting the human body.

Choice of Topic:

• Students may choose any disorder or disease of the human body. The best topic would be one affecting a family member, close friend or famous person.

• See the list of possible topics on page 5 of this document for ideas. Any disease affecting humans is fine. The topic should be narrowed to a specific disease….for example, there are many types of cancer - your project should only cover ONE of them, not all.

• Two students in the same class cannot choose to research on exactly the same topic, though some students may choose topics that overlap one another.

• Students will choose and have their topics approved on a “first come, first served” basis.

As this project is worth 7% of your grade, it is highly recommended that you follow the instructions very carefully.

Specific Guidelines:

Step 1: Choosing a Topic

Pick a topic. To do this, you should think about a disease that perhaps a family member, friend or famous person that you admire has/had. Before finalizing your choice, be sure that you can find at least 10 up-to-date sources of information on your topic that will allow you to find answers to the 10 questions of the project. Page 5 of this document contains a list of possible topics, but any disease or disorder affecting humans is fine.

Step 2: Finding Sources and Making a Bibliography

A. Find a minimum of ten (10) pieces of information that will answer the majority of the 12 questions on your topic. The sources of information can be from anywhere - books, the Internet or pamphlets from medical clinics. At least 50% of the 10 sources must be no older than 5 years and the date must be provable. Wikipedia is NOT a suitable source. If you use a book, make note of the pages that you use.

B. Build a bibliography as you find sources, using proper bibliographic form.

• Go to . Choose MLA style, then click on the source type (ex. Website). Create the MLA citation by filling in the boxes and when done, click on “Make Citation”. Then cut and paste the citation into a word document.

• Then alphabetize the entire list, based on the first word of the entry – author’s name or title of the work if the author is not known.

• All entries must have the title of the article.

• When authors names are known, the last name is stated first

• Both the publication date and the date of access are required for properly referencing information that you find on the Internet.

• If the publication date cannot be found, provide the date that the website was last updated or edited instead.

Note: when the article is from the Internet/webpage, sometimes the date that an article was published is difficult to find. You will often need to go back to the front of the web site or sometimes the end of the website to find either the publication date or the date last updated or edited.

Note: Update and change your bibliography at any point before the submission of your entire project.

Step 3: Questions

Your sources of information will be required to answer the 12 questions below.

You may answer the following questions either in point form or sentences. Where the source provides information in a list or point form, you need to change some words or the order of the list so as to not plagiarize the information.

The Questions

1. Description of the disease/disorder, including the system(s) it affects.

o Does it affect the digestive system, reproductive system, etc.?

2. What are the causes?

o If the cause is unknown, say so. In some cases the exact cause may be unknown but there may be some theories and if so, state the theories

3. What are the parts of the body that are affected?

o List of the body parts

4. How is each of the body parts affected?

o That is, what is the physiology of the disease? Is tissue damaged? Is something not produced or produced in excess?

5. How often does the disease occur?

o State as some sort of number - Frequency/incidence/prevalence/how many people have it - If possible, use Canadian statistics. Be sure to indicate the country that the stats apply to

6. What are the risk factors?

o These are factors that make a person more likely to get the disease. If the disease is inherited, state the risk of inheritance

7. What are the symptoms?

o Just a list, in a different order and/or with slight changes to wording than given in the source

8. How is it diagnosed?

o Name all of the tests (you may give a brief description of them if you like)

9. What are the treatments/management techniques? Can it be cured?

o Give the name of the treatment, drug, etc… and state what the treatment is designed to do….for example chemotherapy - destroys cancer cells with toxic chemicals

10. Can the disease be prevented? If so, state how.

o If your source does not provide this information, the answer can be inferred from the risk factors. It can be assumed that prevention can occur by avoiding any avoidable risk factors

11. What are the effects if the disease is left untreated?

o This is also known as the prognosis. Is the disease likely fatal without treatment? You can also include complications that may occur. If your source does not give this information, you may also be able to infer it.

12. Other interesting information or facts.

Step 5: Reflection Paragraph

Write a paragraph reflecting on how this project has affected you. What awareness has it given you? Has it changed your view on anything? Will this change any future actions/decisions? This section is for you to reflect on information that perhaps interests or worries you.

the disease, choose only ONE.
