Book Talk Score Sheet (rev. 10-19)

LA 6, LA 7, and LA 8 – Common Assessment

Read a good book, then plan and present a two to five minute book talk that is interesting, creative, and maybe even fun. Think of it as a movie trailer for the book. Tell us what’s great about your book and make us want to read it.

These three things are required:

Identify the title and author. Show this information in print in your presentation.

Introduce us to the main character and explain how he or she changes or develops through the story. (How is the main character different as a result of his or her experiences in the story?) Give examples and evidence from the text, but don’t give away too much of the plot.

Share a passage or two from the book to illustrate something you told us, or to show some excellent writing. For example, if you say that Cinderella is kind to everyone, read us a passage where she treats the mice kindly.

These other things are optional. Use the ones that best fit your book:

Start with a hook (a creative way to get the audience interested in the book).

Share background information/history about the book, the author, or the setting.

Tell us about the genre of the book.

Tell what the book is about, but don’t give away too much of the plot. Include problems/conflicts.

Tell us about the author’s tone or about the mood of the book in a few places. Support your statements with evidence from the text.

Share your ideas about the theme of the book.

Have a strong ending to your book talk. You could end with your rating or opinion of the book, a cliffhanger, your favorite passage from the book, or any creative way that leaves us wanting to read the book.
