THRIVE PROGRAM NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!

Dear Friends of Palmetto Middle School:

Palmetto Middle School is in the process of launching an innovative program geared toward engaging and supporting an identified group of 7th and 8th grade boys.  These students have shown a need and interest in understanding the connection between the classroom and workforce.  We would like to educate and serve them by providing engaging hands-on experiences across a variety of career and vocational pursuits.  The program, called T.H.R.I.V.E.: Teaching Habits for Readiness In Vocational Education, will meet once a month after school in addition to field trips to the Career and Technology Center and area businesses.

We are in need of community members, preferably males, who would be willing to share their time and expertise with these boys.  There are several ways you can support this initiative:

• Volunteer to speak to our group at one of our after-school meetings (approximately 3:00 - 4:30) and/or teach a job-related or life skill.  Some skills of student interest include (but are not limited to):  auto mechanics, electric or HVAC repair, construction, law enforcement, fire-fighting, robotics, computer programming, and welding.

• Offer to mentor one of our students in the program.  Mentorships require a minimum of one contact per week and can include visiting the student at school, joining us in the after-school meetings, or checking in via phone or email.

• Invite us into your workplace.  Do you work with your hands?  Have an exciting occupation our students need to learn?  We are always looking for opportunities to give students a glimpse at the possibilities in their future.

• Support our group financially.  Your donation will help offset transportation costs for our field trips and provide students with professional attire on our excursions.

• Refer us to your friends.  If you aren't available to help in any of the above ways at this time, please mention the program to your friends and family.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these boys and our community.  If you have questions or would like to participate in some way, please contact me at 864-634-9274 or couchj@anderson1.k12.sc.us.  Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Important Health News: Tdap Vaccine

Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, all students entering seventh grade must receive (or have received) a Tdap vaccine in order to attend school. The Tdap vaccine protects students from tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis). This vaccine is routinely recommended to be given at 11-12 years of age; however, if Tdap vaccine is needed at an earlier age, a dose received on or after the seventh birthday will meet this requirement.  You must give your child’s school a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization to prove your child has had the shot.

Please avoid the last-minute rush.  Make an appointment with your rising seventh grader’s healthcare provider today to get the newly required Tdap vaccine, along with other vaccines that are recommended for your child’s protection.

Free Tech

1. Padlet: Padlet, formerly called Wallwisher, makes posting things on the Internet as easy as pinning notes on a bulletin board. Using the idea of a blank piece of paper, you can put whatever you want on your wall by dragging and dropping documents and images from your desktop, copying and pasting links to websites or videos or just typing notes on your page.

2. Edcanvas: Edcanvas is a connected space where students and adults can organize, present and share information. Gather, annotate and share presentations easily by dragging and dropping images, movies, maps, audio and text and embedding hyperlinks onto a blank canvas. Use multiple frames on each canvas to pre-teach a topic, provide 1:1 and differentiated instruction, and share pathfinders and explore connections

3. Workflowy: Workflowy is an easy to use outliner/organizer that also functions as a to-do list. Logging on, you see a blank page that looks like a word processing document. After you type your first item, everything thing you type becomes part of one giant list. You can have sub-lists and nested-lists and the best part is that you can click on any topic and you will see a new page with all of the related items.

4. Quadblogging: Quadblogging connects students in four different schools around the corner or around the world to blog with a purpose. Instead of having students write blog posts "that go in their tray to die" teachers sign up on this site and are linked with three other schools to provide an opportunity for elementary and secondary students to blog with each other.

App of the Week

1. Popplet Lite: Great for work. Great for school. Popplet is a platform for your ideas. Popplet's super simple interface allows you to move at the speed of your thoughts. With Popplet you can capture your ideas and sort them visually in realtime. Quickly and easily!

2. Skitch: Show how you feel instead of writing about it. Snap it, mark it, and send it on. Capture a photo and make a friend laugh with you or inspire a student by labeling the insides of a robot. Impress your boss with a snap of the white board with her comments right after the meeting finishes.

3. Autorap: YO. This is AutoRap. It turns speech into rap, and corrects bad rapping.

AutoRap maps the syllables of your speech to any beat, creating a unique rap every time

4. Voicethread: Create and share dynamic conversations around documents, snapshots, diagrams and videos -- basically anything there is to talk about. You can talk, type, and draw right on the screen. VoiceThread takes your conversations to the next level, capturing your presence, not just your comments. Anyone can join the discussion from their iPhone, iPad,
