WELCOME TO THE 5TH GRADE

Welcome to the 6th GRADE!

I am so excited to begin a new year with your child! This is our syllabus for the year. Please read it and keep it at home for reference.

ABSENT FROM SCHOOL

If your child is absent from school, the policy is that they will have one day to make up the work for each day they are absent. An absent/make-up work note will be placed on their desk at the end of the day indicating the work that needs to be done. This note will need to be stapled to the make-up work and placed in the ABSENT TRAY on the correct day to receive credit for the work. This is the responsibility of the student.

BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays are a special time for everyone. If you would like to celebrate with your classmates, please bring a treat that we can have at first recess. If your child has food allergies and you would like for me to keep a special treat box for him or her, please bring it in any time.

BOOK COVERS

All textbooks must be covered at all times. You may use plain brown bags or JUMBO cloth book covers. Each book should have your name/# and subject on the binding and on the cover.

DISCIPLINE PLAN AND CHARTING

The purpose of our discipline system in Sixth Grade is to provide an environment where students treat each other with respect and each child is able to learn.

We have a great chart in class that allows each student to see exactly where they are at each day, and how their choices are affecting them. Each day they get a point total reflecting the color position their marker is sitting in at close of school day. These color/points are recorded daily, placed in the Take Home Folder and are to be shown to you daily for review and discussion if necessary.

The following is a list of our class rules and consequences:

1. Respect others and their property

2. Wait until called upon to talk unless given permission for group work

3. Stay seated at your desk, getting up only after raising your hand and getting permission

4. Work neatly and keep area clean

5. Use time well and complete assignments

6. Have proper uniform daily

7. Always have books and supplies in class

8. Sixth graders are to be leaders and examples for their fellow classmates and students at all times.

This is the breakdown of the complete chart, showing the rewards and consequences of the choices the students choose to make:

• Purple – Great Choices – this shows that a student has gone above and beyond to display excellent behavior in their choices, their attitude, etc.

• Blue – Good Choices – the student has chosen to make a good choice, show extra effort, or displayed behavior that the teacher feels should be given acknowledgement.

• Green – On Task – represents a focused student, maintaining all Green boxes for the entire week represents an A for that week in citizenship.

• Yellow – Think About It – a warning

• Orange – Community Task – student will complete a task assigned and chosen by the teacher, performing a service for their class community, to reflect the consequences of their choices during the day. Depending on the severity parents will be notified.

• Red – Penalty – the student has chosen inappropriate behavior. The penalty may range from detention to the Principal’s office. Parents will be notified.

Points:

• Purple – 5

• Blue – 4

• Green – 3

• Yellow – 2

• Orange – 1

• Red – 0

Each student gets a fresh start each day; points and color placement are only counted daily and reset to Green each morning.

HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENT POLICY

Time management is a skill to be developed in relation to homework. Many assignments are given and worked on in class, but may need to be completed at home. If the student works well in class, it will result in less frustration at home. Some assignments are long-term (two days, a week, etc.). These require practice in doing “a little bit each day” rather than saving all for the last minute. We will work on methods of organization and study skills during the year.

Homework also includes “study time”. Even if there is no written homework for the day, it is a good practice to read and review information we have covered in class. Get these habits in place now, and they will serve your child well as school increases in difficulty and workload in future grades.

Students will be given a planner which they fill out prior to leaving each day. Papers, books to be taken, home and other homework materials are collected and put in their backpack right before dismissal.

Additionally, homework/class work will be posted on RenWeb under HR (homeroom). All graded papers (homework, assignments, tests, quizzes, etc.) are kept in the students’ private folders in class. They are accessible to the parents, whether for a conference or simply if you wish to see their work.
