November’s B.I.G. Theme: Moses Leads the Great Escape

Good morning boys and girls. Shall we start off with a song this morning? Let’s start off with … Who can tell me what we will be celebrating next week? Thanksgiving. That’s right. I bet you’ve been talking a lot these last few weeks at home and at school about what you’re thankful for. That reminds me of our bible story today. Moses and the Israelites were so thankful that God helped lead them out of Egypt that they decided to build him a special worship place called a tabernacle. Today we would probably call it a church. A church is a special place that people build to worship God, right?

In bible times their churches were sometimes called tabernacles and they were like big tents. And this particular tent or tabernacle that they built had to be movable because back then they didn’t just stay in one place to live. They moved around and lived in different places. Sometimes they had to move to escape their enemies. Can you imagine living like that? It was a very different way to live. But like us the Israelites were thankful to God and to show their thanks they built this great big very special place to worship. You might think of it as one of the very first churches ever built. Let’s watch our puppet show and see how this Tabernacle was built.

[Puppet show]

Wow, that was a lot of things everyone gave to show their thanks to God, wasn’t it? So many things were given that Moses had to ask everyone to stop bringing things! They were a very thankful people, and we are a very thankful people. That’s the main point of our story today – that God’s people were so thankful that he had helped them out of Egypt that they build the most beautiful worship place for Him. Today, we are thankful to God for all he has given us. We show our thanks by coming to Church and praying and sharing with others.

I want to teach you a song about being thankful. It goes like this (to the tune of Are You Sleeping?).

I am Thankful

I am Thankful

For my..

For my..

I am very thankful

I am very thankful

How ‘bout you?

How ‘bout you?

Can anyone share something with us that they are thankful for and we can sing our thankful song? (Mommy, Daddy, my house, my teachers, my sister, for food, the sun, the rain, flowers).

Thank you for coming today and I’ll see you in two weeks. Happy Thanksgiving!

Puppet show:

Whiskers

Moses

Whiskers: In our story today, Moses had been talking with God again. Last week, we learned about God talking to Moses about the Ten Commandments. Well, God spoke to Moses a lot. And one time, after they had escaped from Egypt and God have given them the Commandments, God told Moses to have the people build a special place for worship, called a Tabernacle. Moses was a good listener and faithful follower of God so of course he went to the people and told them what God wanted them to do. Here comes Moses now.

Moses: People of Israel, God wants us to build him a Tabernacle. The Tabernacle will be a big tent where we can come to worship God. It will be a very special place so everyone should bring very special things to help build the tabernacle and make it special.

Whiskers: After hearing God’s wishes the people wanted to make this Tabernacle the most special place in the world. They all started bringing their most prized possessions. They brought jewels (throw over some necklaces). They brought silver and bronze (throw over some coins). They brought beautiful wooden sculptures (place wooden things on the stage). They brought fine linens and cloth (throw over the ribbons). They brought their most special things to make this a beautiful and special place (throw over some other items). And they kept bringing more things (throw over more play coins and jewelry). Until finally, it was more than they could use!

Moses: Wow, that’s a lot of stuff! My people really do love the Lord and want this to be the most special place (throw over a few more things). OK, I think it’s time to stop giving now. That’s quite enough (throw a few last items). Uh, guys, did you hear me? Really, that’s enough.

Whiskers: After bringing all their special things, the people worked together to build the Tabernacle. They were glad to have a wonderful place to worship God together. Moses and the people were happy and proud of what they had done. They knew that they were God’s people and God was their God.
