“A GOOD THING”

Psalms 92:1

In this 19th book of the Bible, amidst its 150 chapters, 2,461 verses, 43,743 words, we find the 3 that formulate the TEST & TITLE of this message, “A good thing.”

( Sometimes we say something is “A good thing….”

“It’s a good thing Conservatives won this November…

…..it’s a good thing Auburn didn’t give up when they were 24 points behind”

……the Bible tells us for sure what “a good thing” is!

I. GODLY WIVES ARE A GOOD THING

Prov 18:22 “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.”

* “All you need for happiness is a good gun, a good horse, and a good wife.” (Daniel Boone)

Gen 2:18 “ the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

A. THE EXCEPTION TO THE RULE

A Proverb is a principle- not a pact ! A man does not always find a good thing when he finds a wife!

( Ahab certainly didn’t find a good one!

Prov 12:4 “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”

* One young pastor had a negative and critical woman in his church. She was always complaining. He called his dad to see if his dad could give him a solution to the problem.

His father’s remedy was very simple. He said, "Son, the next time that lady comes up to you and begins griping, complaining, criticizing, take her by the hand, get down on your knees with her and pray this prayer:

‘Dear God, I want to thank you ….that this lady is not my wife!’"

~the man who finds "a good thing" is the man who finds a good woman!

Prov 31:30” Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

B. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE JEWEL

A GOOD WOMAN …….is HARD 2 FIND!

Many a man started off looking for “Mrs. Right” ……..and settled for Mrs. Right Now!!

Proverbs 31:10 “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.”

* Somebody said the reason there is no verse that says the same about men is -b/c good men don’t exist! *

*One thing for sure, behind every Good man is a GREAT woman. and a surprised mother in law!*

There is more to finding a good wife than looking for one “easy on the eyes”.

" As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion." (Prov 11:22)

*One Pastor Friend of mine said he prayed for a BIG Church and a LITTLE wife!

He said God gave it the other way around! ( (…..too much of a good thing?????)

αMany a pretty woman on the outside…. is pretty awful on the inside!

* An elderly couple, sat down to their Thanksgiving dinner. Before eating, his wife speaks up. "Can I ask you a question?" "Sure," he says, waiting to dig into his meal. "Has our 50 years of marriage made you grateful?"

"Yes, indeed!" he replied. "For the 20 years I was a bachelor!"

Titus 2:3-5 “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

* …. Not like the poor man who complained that he wanted a hot breakfast,

…..so his wife handed him a match and said "“Here! Set your cornflakes on fire!"”

( I Thank God for my wife!!!!!!!!! I have…” obtaine(d) favour of the LORD”!
