COMMUNITY SERVICE

Cheque presentation by Doug Slowski to Shawna Cochrane, Transformations Learning Society.

SERGEANT AT ARMS

Cheerfully, Ralph L. said we made his job ever so easy. As an opener, thanks to Tess & Jan, we did our best ever on O’Canada. Tess is enjoying her costuming work on Mama Mia. Shawna is looking forward to her June 7th Beer & burger fundraiser. See Steve for tickets, more information. Doug ruefully reminded us of the Colwood crawl…when it comes to road congestion, timing is everything. Today, somewhat exhausted, last evening, Sheila had a grand time as hostess for a wine & dine evening with friends at her home. Dave E. is sending an email roster call for breakfast volunteers, Friday May 10th Don T. enjoyed good fellowship at the Rotary Club of Courtney golf tournament at Crown Isle. Ralph Lemmon spoke about incredible RCMP co-ordination in a recent criminal apprehension on Terminal Avenue. Rachel was delighted with the results of the clean-up event at Piper’s and very appreciative of support from Club Members. TY Rachel!

Winning ticket was held by Joy. Ongoing, no joker was drawn. Next week the pot will be $ 230.

Mmm…I wonder if there really is a joker in this deck.

RCMP National Underwater Recovery Training Centre, Nanaimo, BC

[pic]

Sgt. G.E. (Jay) White, officer in charge of the RCMP’s National Underwater Recovery Training Centre (URT), gave us an insightful, interesting presentation. Located in Nanaimo, this is one of two permanent year round training centres for these skills in North America. Established in 2006, Nanaimo is recognized as a centre of excellence in this field. All RCMP divers come to Nanaimo to receive intensive training on methods and techniques for searching for and recovering drowning victims. Participants gain skills necessary to do police work underwater and how to meld their dive knowledge with their police knowledge. Initial underwater recovery training is a grueling five-weeks. Further optional courses include ice diving, rescue diving and underwater explosive recognition. Currently, across Canada, there are 115 RCMP URT trained officers, working general duty policing jobs, diving when the need arises. Their URT work is quite diverse and complex. Body recovery is central; other work includes underwater photography & filming, VIP security at significant public events, forensic investigations, underwater explosive recognition, over turned marine vessel support/rescue. Equally diverse are working conditions – swift water rapids, sea ice diving, warm water/algae bloom, big storms with frightening winds.

Guest Presentation, URT

On the upside of URT members work world, underwater sea life on our coast is spectacular, our Island weather facilitates year round training and logistics within our area provide a huge variety of training options. While sometimes annoying, sea lions are great fun. Wolf eels are inquisitive and friendly. The giant octopus is smart and it likes to touch your hand.

Technology is this field is ongoing changing. Sgt. White regularly hosts police and fire departments from across Canada & the US. Likewise, globally, at every opportunity, he takes in training courses and gives lectures. This morning, from Barry Sparkes “Thank-you for what you do thank-you for speaking.”

2019 DISTRICT 5020 CONFERENCE

DISTRICT GOVERNOR – CRAIG GILLIS

The reception at Government House was a grand event in a spectacular setting. Most appropriate, our Government House host spoke briefly about the today role of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and the historical background of the Queen’s representatives’ in Canada.

Youth - our treasure and our future!

(District Governor Craig Gillis)

‘A survey of many Rotarians would likely reveal that many join or remain in the ‘Family of Rotary’ because of its advocacy for youth programs. As a teacher the Rotary imprint was so evident in our schools and community. Leadership, literacy, and scholarship programs flourish because of Rotary’s partnership. As a parent I felt so fortunate that our son could experience that rare gift of youth exchange – a year of language, culture, and deeper world understanding. Annually our District Rotary clubs offer close to $ 1,000,000 in scholarships, invite hundreds of students to club meetings, engage in countless literacy projects that support reading, and create a myriad of leadership opportunities that prepare students to take initiative and assume responsibility. Students so very naturally know how to “Be the Inspiration”…and demonstrate how “Rotary Connects the World”. Whatever you do to support youth programs…a sincere thank you!’

FUN STUFF

A WIFE IS SPEAKING TO HER HUSBAND…

[pic]Wife: I have a bag full of used clothing I’d like to donate.

Husband: why not just throw it in the trash? That’s much easier.

Wife: but there are poor starving people who could really use all of these clothes.

Husband: honey, anyone who fits into your clothing is not starving.

Food for thought: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

- Winston Churchill

“Whatever you are, be a good one.”

- Abraham Lincoln
