OVERVIEW

Your iwi is about to publish their first newspaper online and they need help. They want everybody in the iwi to read their paper so they are looking for ways to attract readers. You need to think up a great name for the newspaper and then think up some great headlines. As well as that, you have to write the opening sentences for each article so that it sounds interesting enough to keep on reading.

INSTRUCTIONS

Look at the blank outline of a front page. Each numbered box except numbers 1, 3 and 7 must have a headline and opening sentence. The headline should be bold and interesting. The opening sentences should contain the what, where, when, why, who and how.

What to put where?

1. The name of the newspaper for your iwi – make it interesting and catchy.

2. Lead story about something important that has happened recently (a bit of hot gossip about the whānau or your school friends).

3. A picture that matches your lead story (Hemi stealing kumara from Aunty Mihi’s garden)

4. Sports results from the weekend (go and find out who won the netball or rugby!)

5. A picture of the most handsome young bachelor in your iwi, his name and details (you can pretend if you can’t think of anyone)

6. A picture of the most beautiful young spinster in your iwi, her name and details

7. The weather for the day – draw a picture and give a short description
