I have a couple highlights from the reports given at the meeting to share. First, the Public Health Nurse went to Lincoln School to complete an audit of student immunizations and found a compliance rate of 100% after reviewing 46 records. Also, there was a pretty well attended blood pressure screening in April with 26 Garwood seniors in attendance. 16 Garwood seniors were screened at the one in May. The helmet giveaway program is underway to prevent brain injury with 12 being disturbed at a child health clinic. There are some left, so if anyone is interested you can contact the health department. In other meeting news, the Board of Health passed a resolution encouraging the state to increase funding for mental health, social, and guidance services and resources. This resolution will be sent to the State Board of Health as well as state legislators. It was distributed to the Council via email. Field Trip Dates: 16th to Gallop Hill Golf Course, sponsored by County of Union, on the 24t, Walking trip to Canoe Club in Cranford and the 30th to Turtle Back Zoo. Themed “Dig into Reading”, the program is open to all Garwood children, from pre-reader through grade 8. All participants are requested to log in the amount of time that they read to be eligible for prizes and surprises at the end of the program. The calendar logs and instructions are available at the Circulation Desk of the Library. There will be craft events on July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, and August 6, all Tuesdays at 3:00PM, for children who have completed 2nd grade and older. Registration is required as space is limited to 20 youngsters. Movies for kids will be shown on Thursday afternoons at 2:00 PM on July 11, July 25, as well as August 1st and 15th. Registration is not required to attend the movies, however, any child eight years and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. On Thursday, July 18, at 2:00 PM, the Library will host a program entitled “It came from Beneath the Earth”, presented by Snakes ‘n Scales. In this program, they will explore the creatures, their problems and their solutions using the giant Snakes-N-Scales family of rescued animals. These animals will include reptiles, amphibians, spiders and some creatures sure to surprise. Registration is required for this event, with preference given to Garwood residents. On Wednesday, July 31, at 7:00 PM, magician Mark Zacharia will present a program for adults entitled “Murder, Mystery, and Magic” Mark Zacharia’s magic has astounded children in past library programs, and now he turns his attention to the adults who will not cease to be amazed. Registration is required for this event. Registration for any or all of these events may be done in person at the Library, by phone, or at the Library’s interactive calendar page found at garwood. The library is now closed on Saturdays during the summer until after Labor Day.
