US HISTORY CURRENT EVENTS ASSIGNMENT

As we go through this course you will notice that history impacts all parts of life. To help with this observation you will have a current event assignment that will focus on themes appropriate for the units we have and will study. Keep this paper to help you with your current events.

You must find one current event article for each on the following units/themes. This means you have a total of three current events due by the end of the quarter, each on a different unit.

Directions: Locate a Current Event article from a newspaper, news magazine, or online news source. The article must be a minimum of 300 words, about the United States and the article must be from the 3 weeks prior to the due date for the article to count as current. For full credit consideration you must include all of the following information.

1. SUMMARY. Summarize what you learned about the current event in a complete paragraph. Make sure you include the main idea and supporting details. Summarize the article in your own words...do not just copy a few sentences.

2. DESCRIBE THE ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND/OR POLITICAL ASPECTS OF THIS ARTICLE. (This could be implications, causes, effects, and/or influences.) This may come from the article itself or you may think of this information on your own. Describe the economic, social, and/or political aspects in at least a 6-sentence paragraph.

3. HOW DOES THE ARTICLE RELATE TO THE ASSIGNED UNIT THEME? Use a minimum of 3 complete sentences. DO NOT include the sentence, "This article is related to the theme ______."

4. WHY IS THIS ISSUE SIGNIFICANT? Why is this article important to you, the country, or to anyone? How does the issue fit into a larger picture? Why does it matter? Use a minimum of 4 complete sentences.

5. INCLUDE ALL BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION IN MLA FORMAT. Use the following sites to help put your bibliographic information in MLA format: or

Off topic articles are those not related to the assigned theme or not about the United States
