|After completing coursework, PhD students must pass a written exam (in Nutrition major area)

1-4 weeks after passing the written exam, an oral exam will be conducted in major and minor areas.

A minor area advisor will participate in the oral comprehensive exam |Students formulate dissertation ideas

|Students select a faculty member from Nutrition to serve as Chair of their dissertation

Students’ initial academic advisor may also serve as dissertation Chair (research advisor)

Student and Chair determine dissertation format – traditional or 3 papers |Students select committee members in consultation with their Chair; names are submitted to the GPD

Students’ initial minor area advisor for their comps may also serve as final minor advisor for dissertation

Committee membership is made official after the proposal defense |Student defends proposal for cmte members and the public; cmte determines if student passed and can go on to collect data.

Proposal should be available to committee members 10 days prior to the defense

Submit to Grad School:

|Students let GPD know defense date at least 1 month ahead of time

Students submit a copy of their dissertation to Department’s Main Office 10 business days before defense date

Students defend their dissertation for committee members and the public; committee members vote to determine if the student passed |Complete Doctoral Degree Eligibility form and give to GPD along with an unofficial copy of UMASS transcripts

Complete online Exit Survey (for SPHHS), coordinate this with Eileen

Submit to Grad School:

1. One original signature page

A copy of the final dissertation –via Scholarworks
