Short Story Unit - English 12

Short Story Unit - English 12

Objectives for this unit:

• a grade 12 level of understanding of short story concepts and terms

• an ability to distinguish the various aspects of a short story and how each can add to the whole

• a chance to work on a story that interests you

• an enhanced ability to write your own story

• sharpen your understanding of what is expected on the provincial exam

How it will work:

1. The teacher will go through each unit of study in Story and Structure and notes will be taken on each.

2. Stories will be given to students to read on their own, to watch in class, and to listen to. Then we will apply the concepts learned to the stories.

3. Once the chapters are taught, students will be assigned a group which will cover the following:

- choose a story

- get ready to share it with the class through an entertaining means (reading theatre style, dramatize live or on video or on YouTube, or narration) One absolute rule here: DON’T BORE US.

- be ready to answer any 5 questions of any element about your story in front of the class after your presentation. These elements will include plot, character, theme, point of view, symbolism, irony, emotion, humour, and fantasy. Page 352 (2nd Edition) or page 318 (8th Edition) of Story and Structure has a list of potential questions which can help your preparation.

4. Narrative essay writing will be taught with a provincial exam style of short story to be written in class near the end of the unit.

5. A short story aspects test will be given as the final aspect of this unit.
