DAREarts Program

DAREarts Grade Eight Dance Day started with a trip down memory lane. The delegates listened to the song they recorded last week during music day and reflected on some of their favourite DAREarts memories to date. We then met with Ms. D, known as Fly Lady Di, a professional hip hop dancer with over twenty years of experience. The class was fascinated to hear her long list of credits – especially that she has worked with Director X! Ms. D started her workshop with an inspiring message about Grade 8 being such an informative time in her life. She encouraged the delegates to explore their passions, to believe in themselves, and to stay driven and committed. Ms. D gave the group a mini lesson on the history of hip hop and DAREarts delegate, Maria, helped her out with her expertise. It wasn’t long before the class was up and moving. Ms. D started with some conditioning and fundamental movements in hip hop like the Smurf and the Shamrock. These ‘party’ moves are all about having fun and that’s exactly what our group did. After getting down the basics, the class had a choreography workshop in the afternoon. They explored a variety of formations to show off their new dance moves. After lots of perseverance, effort, commitment and practice, the group came away from the day with a polished performance piece. The delegates used our closing circle time to discuss how great it felt to move away from the awkward initial feelings of the day into a proud feeling after they exerted so much effort.
