Weekly Writing Prompts - Mrs. Connell's Class

5707380-38104572000 Homework Writing Prompts Due on or before October 16Below is a collection of writing prompts that you can choose from for your homework. Select the writing activity that sounds interesting to you. Use lined looseleaf paper for your writing. You may use unlined paper for illustrations that might accompany your writing. For your assignment, make sure you include the heading, Writing Homework, along with your name and the date. If you are writing a story or narrative, include a title as well. Turn your writing in on or before the due date. You only need to have ONE piece of completed writing, however, of course it’s okay to do more than one if you like! Remember: Do not rush through these writing assignments. Each piece should be an example of quality work. Always reread your work, then reread it again! To make sure you have time to do your best work, do not wait until right before it is due to begin. If a prompt says to write a paragraph, remember to start with an introductory sentence, include 3-5 detail sentences and end with a concluding sentence. That means an absolute minimum of five sentences! Plan before you write! Get your ideas down on paper before you begin. If I was a third grader (and I was once!) I would do a rough draft then have someone at home check it over after I thought I had made all the corrections and it was perfect. Then I would do a final draft to turn in to my teacher. That’s just a suggestion, but a very good one!Students in third grade know that sentences begin with capital letters as do all proper nouns (specific names of people, places and things.) I know my third graders wouldn’t even think of writing sentences that are fragments or do not have ending punctuation. They also know proper spelling is important. Do not “guess” at how to spell words. Look them up or ask! Choose one of the following…5257800359410October is National Pizza Month. Many families order pizza, but have you ever made your own? Now is your chance! You could use any toppings you want. You could even make a dessert or appetizer pizza!Decide how you are going to make the pizza. Are you going to buy the crust premade or will you use your own? Find a recipe from a cookbook or the internet (with an adult's help!)Read the recipe carefully, and then copy the recipe down on paper in your neatest handwriting, using the same format as the recipe. List the ingredients and their amounts at the top and the step by step directions at the bottom. Make this recipe with an adult’s help. Now here’s the writing part. In paragraph form, explain to me why and how you chose to make your pizza the way you did. What toppings did use? Explain why you liked this recipe best. Describe what you did to help. How did it come out? Would you make it again? Take a picture of you making your dish or one of the finished product! Include it with your homework. 363855528320The holiday season is just around the corner! Write a paragraph telling what your favorite holiday is. Give at least three details describing what you like best about that holiday. Remember to start with an introductory sentence and end with a closing sentence that wraps up your paragraph. Illustrate your paragraph to show some of your favorite parts of your favorite holiday.589788094615The International Red Cross was organized in Geneva, Switzerland on October 26, 1863.? This is an organization that helps people in need.? They are quick to the scene to help and care for people in fires, floods and other disasters. Write a personal narrative (a true story about yourself) about a time that you showed caring toward someone or someone showed caring toward you. Perhaps you helped someone who was hurt or you did something nice for someone who needed cheering up. It can be about something that happened at home or school. Remember to start with a catchy beginning and make sure your story has a beginning, middle and an end. A personal narrative should be about one looseleaf page long (two pages if you skip lines!)5802630100965Who is your favorite author? One of my favorite authors is Tomie dePaola. Check out a Tomie dePaolo or any other picture book by your favorite author from our school library or use a picture book from your at-home collection. Read the story. Write a summary of the book and give a review of it. For your summary, be sure to include the name of the book, author and how many pages it had. I should know who the main characters are, where the story took place and what happened in the beginning, middle and end. For the review part, tell whether you liked it or not and why. What were your favorite parts? 5421630570865Finally, explain why the author you chose is one of your favorite writers. What other books of theirs have you read?Pablo Picasso, the famous artist, was born in Spain on October 25 in 1881.? On a clean, white sheet of paper, draw a picture of your favorite place.? This may be a place that you have traveled to or perhaps it is a place nearby or even a special spot in your house.? After you have drawn your place, write a paragraph describing this location (so the reader can visualize it) and tell why it is so special to you. Halloween is coming up. Write a spooky fictional story that includes a haunted house and a problem that must be solved! Make sure to use lots of detail in your writing so your reader feels as if he/she can visualize the characters and the setting. All good stories have a beginning, middle and an end. Your story should be at least one page long, two if you skip lines. 5191125154305On a separate sheet of paper, draw the haunted house from your story. I like a spooky story, but just like when we write in class, this needs to be a friendly story that does not include blood or gore, violence, weapons or any of that unfriendly stuff! ................
