What is Photosynthesis??

Cell Energy Energy: Energy for living things comes from food. Originally, the energy in food comes from the sun.

Essential Questions

1. What organelle does photosynthesis take place in? 2. What is the role of light, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll in the process of photosynthesis? 3. What products are made from the process of photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis

Three Materials Needed for a Green Plant to Make its Own Food

1. Light energy from the Sun

2. Water from the soil

3. Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ) from the air

This food-making process is called photosynthesis which occurs in the chloroplast. This only occurs during the daylight hours. Let's investigate further into how this process works.

In your notes....

Process of Photosynthesis Sketch

1. Make a quick sketch of this drawing of photosynthesis. Make it large enough to add details during lesson

2. Add the 3 materials needed for photosynthesis to the picture.

3. Include arrows to indicate the direction of flow.

Photosynthesis = Light ENERGY

The Sun or light from another source hits the leaves.

The pigment chlorophyll (found in the chloroplasts) allows the plant to absorb the light energy.

Only occurs in green leaves

What is Chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is a pigment, or color, found inside the part of a plant called a Chloroplast. Chlorophyll gives plants their GREEN color. Chloroplasts are small parts, or organelles, located inside the cells of the plant. Here is what they look like!!

Water

enters the roots of a green plant from the soil

is transported up the plant to the leaves through special tissue in the plant

Water then combines with Carbon Dioxide to help create energy.

This energy is in the form of Glucose.
