Summer Reading List ~ Entering 6th Grade

PENN-DELCO SCHOOL DISTRICTNORTHLEY MIDDLE SCHOOLSUMMER READINGGRADE 62012Spring 2012Dear Parents and Students:All of us who are involved in teaching Reading and English acknowledge the value of practicing reading all year long – not just during the school year. For that reason, we have developed a required summer reading assignment because we believe it will help students meet academic challenges in the coming year and encourage them to develop independent reading habits.Students are required to read two books – one is required for every student and one the students select from a list. We will give the lists to the local library and to area bookstores.Directions for students entering Grade 6:Read a choice book, take a Reading Counts quiz, and complete one assignment. For the book of choice, we recommend that parent and student discuss the selection for its appropriateness for the individual student. While books are selected carefully, some students/families may be more sensitive to certain topics than others. Read the required book, take a Reading Counts quiz, and complete the other assignment.Bring both assignments to your English and Reading classes on the first day of school in September.Students may take Reading Counts quizzes during the summer or in September when they return to school. The library computer lab will be open any Wednesday in July (beginning July 11th) and August from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.This packet of information is also available on the Penn-Delco website at .The above information will be reviewed and discussed by the fifth grade teachers before the end of the school year.Sincerely,Carol L.
