A young woman with a healthy heart called Denise Dorval had been killed

in a car accident.

The medical team, led by Doctor Barnard took her heart and transplanted

it into Mr Washkansky's body.

The operation was a success, but Washkansky died 18 days later of a

lung infection.

Doctor Barnard became world famous.
