DATE: JUNE 3-7, 2012

TOPIC: IDENTIFYING MAIN IDEA AND SUPPORTING DETAILS

AIM: For students to be able to locate and clearly express in oral and written forms, the meaning (main idea and supporting details) of pictures, paragraphs, passages, stories etc.

DAY 1

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1) Infer main idea from pictures.

2) Read short paragrahs/sentences to determine their topics.

3) Complete a main idea and details map after reading a passage from their text.

MOTIVATION

The teacher will play a song for the students to listen to. She will think aloud to give the song a title.

MINI LESSON

The teacher will show students a picture of a group of people. She will then think aloud to give the picture a title. Again she will think aloud to give three details from the picture to support the title. She will then use the information to complete a main idea and details map. She will explain to students that the main idea is the most important piece of information in a picture or passage. It is the main point being made. She will link it to the title she gave to the picture. The students will be told that the suppoorting details give additional information about the main idea. They helps readers to understand the points being made. The teacher will then go back to the song that she gave a title and find 3 supporting details from the song that gives additional information about the main idea. she will explain to students that when they are able to identify the relationship between the main idea and the supporting details it helps in their overall comprehension of what is read (also improves our comprehension of the text).

GROUP/PEER WORKK

Each group will be given a picture and a main idea map. The students will be required to find the main idea the picture portrays then give at leastt 2 details to support the main idea.

WHOLE CLASS SHARE

Each group will present their picture and the information on their main idea and details map. The teacher and students will discuss the the respnses to ensure that everyone uderstands the concept/skill. INDEPENDENT WORK Each student will be required to read at least 3 short passages to find the main dea and supporting details. the teacher will move around to check on students. EVALUATION 1 Each student will be required to read a science passage to complete a main idea and details map. AFTER CLASS ACTIVITY The studetns will be required to cut a picture story from the newspaper and and paste it in their book, then write the main idea and 3 details. EVALUATION 1

DAY 2 Objective: by the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1) Complete a main idea and details map (mobile) after listening to a passage.

2) Select a passage from a basket to complete a main idea and details map while working cooperatively in groups.

3) Identify the main idea and details inshort tpassages while playing a ball game.

MOTIVATION

The students will be required to watch a dramatization of two students arguing.

MINI LESSON

The teacher will think aloud the events of the dramatization and write them on the board. The will look at all the details to determoin the main idea while thinking alloud. She will remind students that the main idea is the most imortant pooint being made and the details give addtional information about the main idea.

GROUP/ PEER WORK

The teacher and students will discuss the passage "Shopping with Miss Milly." The teacher and students will then read the passage. They will then be required to complete a main idea and details mobile with the shapes provided.

WHOLE CLASS SHARE

Each group will present their mobiles and read what they wrote. The teacher and students will discuss the responses to ensure that everyone understands the skill.

INDEPENDENT WORK

Each student will be given a passage on "Vebeke on Fire" to read to answer at least 5 questions at the different levels of comprehension.

AFTER CLASS ACTIVITY

EVALUATION 1

DAY 3 Objectives: by the end of the lesson, students should be able to:1) Read a story to list the events that supports the main idea. 2) in a song or a poem explain the difference between main idea and supporting details. 3) read a passage from their Social Studies text to complete a main idea and details map.

MOTIVATION The teacher will read a short story fot the student. (Polar Bears) MINI LESSON The teacher will think aloud the events of the story to complete a main idea and detals map. She will explain t o students that the moral or theme of the story is usually the main idea. She will also explain that the events in the story are the details. GROUP/PEER WORK The students will be required to watch a video clip. They will be required to write the main event and two supporting details. WHOLE CLASS SHARE The teacher and students will discuss the responses to ensure that everyone understands. INDEPENDENT WORK The students will be required to explain the importance of learning about main idea and supporting details as well as their differences in the form of a poem or song EVALUATION 1 1) The students will be given a passage to read then complete a main idea and details map. 2) They will be required to answer at least 5 questions at the different levels of comprehension.

EVALUATION 2

DAY 4 Objectives: by the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1) Listen to a song then complete a main idea and details hand print. 2) Read a passage (Tricky Hans) to complete a main idea and details map. 3) Reread the passage to answer at least 5 questions at the different levels of comprehension. MOTIVATION The teacher and students will do a ball review of the days lesson. GROUP/PEER WORK The teacher will play a song for the students to listen to and complete a hand print with the main idea in the palm and the details in the fingers. WHOLE CLASS SHARE The teacher and students will discuss the resposes to ensure that everyone understands. INDEPENDENT WORK Teacher and students will read Tricky Hans after which each student will be required to complete a main idea and details map. EVALUATION 1 The students will be required to answer at least 6 questions at the different levels of

comprehension. AFTER CLASS ACTIVITY The students will be required to readp apge 32 of their science text to complete a main idea and details map. they willalso be required to do a journal entry of the days lesson. EVALUATION 2

DAY 5 READ ALOUD AND RESPOND

A COW CALLED BOY STEPS:1) The teacher will read to students for 15 minutes after discussing the chapter title. 2) The teacher and students will discuss what was read look at specific words. 3) The students will be required to write a paragraph based on the followiing prompt: "It was the first day of school and Josh was in a fix because .........."
