Course Description: Pre-AP class is more rigorous than a regular English class because students are earning a Pre-AP credit. Therefore, Pre-AP classes will be complete more reading, writing and projects. The course expectations are higher it will improve students’ skills in reading, writing, critical and analytical thinking, as well as increase students’ knowledge of different literary genres. Students will be able to apply academic knowledge learned in class to build upon prior knowledge and future experiences beyond the classroom setting. In addition, students will be able to use knowledge acquired in class to ensure their success on district and state mandated tests.

Materials used and needed: Writer’s Choice Grammar and Composition Grade 7, Glenco,McGraw-Hill, copyright 2009 & Glenco Literature Reading with Purpose Course 2, Glenco, McGraw-Hill, copyright 2009- textbooks,

Materials: In addition to the items listed on the 7th Grade Supply List students will need:

• 1-Three prong folder with pockets

• Access to a computer with internet access and printing capability

• 1- three subject note book

• 2- Poster boards

Please do not purchase the poster boards yet. Information about them will be given at a later time.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. Know and use word analysis skills and strategies to strengthen vocabulary and improve comprehension

2. Improve knowledge and application of the reading process in order to comprehend, interpret and evaluate literature and informational text

3. Improve knowledge and application of the writing process in order to formulate well- developed and coherent paragraphs and compositions for various purposes and audiences

4. Write using Standard English grammar, usage, punctuation, capitalization and spelling

5. Utilize speaking and listening skills for effective communication

6. Select and apply appropriate study/learning strategies for various school, work and everyday living situations

7. Apply communication skills that are essential in everyday living situations

8. Integrate multi-media into effective research strategies

9. Establish goals and plans for life-long learning

10. Develop an understanding of good character ethics by responding appropriately to a wide variety of written and oral communication

11. Develop an awareness and appreciation of other cultures

12. Write expository, persuasive, narrative, descriptive, and imaginative compositions

Overview of Assignments: Please be sure to check the classroom website for weekly previews of assignments. Each student must have a school planner and assignments given in class are to be written in the planner. At times it may necessary for the instructor to make changes in class that are not reflected in the assignments posted on the website. Changes will be posted on the board in the classroom, and the students will be notified. All assignments are to be turned in on the specified due date at the beginning of class. Students who check out prior to class should turn in the assignment prior to leaving campus. Checking out before turning in assignment will result in a zero.

Course Outline

First Quarter: Literature Unit 1, Composition, Grammar, Vocabulary, Punctuation, Accelerated Reader, Laying the Foundation Curriculum

Second Quarter: Literature Unit 2, Composition, Parts of Speech, Accelerated Reader, Figurative Language, Vocabulary, Grammar, Laying the Foundation Curriculum

Third Quarter: Literature Unit 3&4, Composition, Vocabulary, Sentence Structure, Accelerated Reader, Story Elements, Develop library &research process, Grammar, Laying the Foundation Curriculum

Fourth Quarter: Literature Unit 5&6, Letters, Grammar, Research project

Poetry, Drama, Biographies & Autobiographies, Presentations and Public Speaking, Accelerated Reader, Laying the Foundation Curriculum

Make-up/ Late work Procedures: Late and or Make-up work will NOT be accepted unless absent or excused from class. In both cases there must be a written excuse presented upon returning to class. Student may meet with teacher before 1st period or after 6th with excuse to receive work. The work must be turned in three days after the absence, put in the corresponding basket. Students with an unexcused absence may not make up assignments. Student work not made up will result in a zero in the grade book.

Homework Policy:

Homework will be given through out the course of the semester. Homework is due the next day, if the student is absent it is due upon returning to class.

Major Projects:

There will be four major projects, one per quarter. More information will be given at a later date.

Tardy and Attendance Policy: Students that enter late are required to sign their names on the tardy sheet. This log is for my records and is monitored throughout the semester. Floyd Middle Magnet School tardy and attendance policy will be enforced. Constant absenteeism can and will result in failure of the course.

Grading Policy:

Individual assignments will be graded according to a straight percentage basis:

A 100%-90%

B 89%-80%

C 79%-70%

D 69%-60%

F 59 & Below

Assignments will be done both in class and at home. Test and quizzes are administered throughout the course of study to determine the individual student’s development as well as the effectiveness of the teaching/learning environment. Graded work will not be sent home. Student’s graded work will remain in the class room in their file with other pertinent documents. Students and parents will have access to the files for any reason. Grades are based on a total point system and accumulate throughout the quarter. All assignments, due dates, test dates and point value will be discussed in class.

Semester Evaluation: Your grade in this course will be the result of your performance in three categories. Below is a list of those grades and percentages. The grading scale in this class will be as reflected in the FMMS Student Handbook.

Minor Grades 30%

Major Grades 65%

Honesty Policy

**Cheating and or Plagiarism will not be accepted. Students in violation of committing those acts will receive a Failing grade an “F”.

Class Behavior Expectations:

Unacceptable behaviors include, but are not limited to, classroom disturbance, verbal harassment, excessive or inappropriate comments.

3. Phone call to parent/guardian

4. Letter to parent/guardian signed and returned to teacher

5. Principal Referral/Suspension

**Severe Clause: Any act which is severe enough to warrant an immediate response will result in an office referral. These acts may include, but are not limited to, fighting, vandalism, stealing, extreme disrespect or defiant behavior toward the teacher, or acts which endanger the safety of others.
