9th Grade Honors Reading List and Tentative Schedule

(Any changes will be announced):

1st 9-weeks:

1. Fiction: Your choice! Choose a book of your choice by an Alabama Author.

• Your book must be approved (I MUST SEE IT WITH MY EYES—NOT WORD OF MOUTH) by Monday, August 22nd !

• Suggested Titles/authors: In Cold Blood by Truman Capote; Fannie Flagg(author), Walker Percy(author) There are MANY, MANY more!

• Book must be read and project completed by Friday, Sept. 9th (Project Assignment handout to follow ASAP!)

2. Alabama Literature/Literature of the South: Big Fish by Daniel Wallace (I have a few copies that may be checked out on a first come, first serve basis)

• Must be purchased by Monday, Sept. 12th. Order online at or . I can also call and order some at the Books A Million in Oxford. Try libraries! Be creative. Just don’t wait, or you’ll be in a MESS!

• We will conduct Lit circles with this novel, so you’ll be assigned groups ASAP. We will also conduct some fun group and class projects!

• All projects and tests will be completed by Friday, Sept 30 !

2nd 9-weeks:

1. Choose a non-fiction book. This must be a biography, memoir, or an autobiography.

• Some suggested: It’s all Over but the Shoutin’ by Jacksonville, AL native Rick Bragg; Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass; On Writing by Stephen King

• There are MANY, many life stories out there! Find what interests you and get it approved!

• Your novel MUST be approved (I must see the book with my own eyes) no later than Monday, OCT 3rd.

• Your book project is due Friday, October 21st (assignment details to follow) NO Late Assignments will be accepted for ANY REASON.

2. Class Reading: Cathy’s Book by Stewart/Weisman/Brigg (I have several copies that can be checked out/purchased on a first come/first serve /need basis)

• Book Check (BRING TO CLASS) Monday, Oct 17th !

• Assignment to Follow. All assignments and tests will be completed by Monday, Nov 7th.

3. Class Reading: The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

• Must be purchased and brought to class by Friday, November 18th!

• All assignments will be completed by Dec 12th.

3rd 9-weeks:

1. Holocaust Literature: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

• You must purchase this novel by the end of the 2nd 9-week grading period (Book Check Dec 12th before Christmas break. Holocaust Short Story will be due by Friday, January 21st.)

2. Choose your own Mystery/Suspense Novel: Must be approved! No exceptions!

• Book check: TUESDAY, Jan 17th (after we return from MLK holiday)

• Assignments TBA –final deadline Feb 3.

3. Class Reading: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (class set provided)—All assignments and test on March 5th.

4th 9-weeks:

1. Choose a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel – Some suggested titles include Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Fahrenheit 451, Harry Potter

• Book Check: Monday, March 5th (BEFORE the end of the 3rd 9 weeks grading period)

• final due date for all tests and assignments –April 2.

• You must purchase this novel by the end of the 3rd 9-week grading period

2. Drama/Theatre Literature: TBA
