Fall Semester 2010-11 (Block 3)

The final exam for Creative Writing will consist of a series of writings that show your mastery of the following literary writing styles: poetry, fiction, and screenplays. You will have to create a portfolio that includes a sample of each style. Below I have included a rubric with the requirements of each and how they will be graded. The final product will be compiled into a portfolio folder and turned in on exam day. On the day of the exam, we will workshop these works as a final review.

Keep in mind that these samples will show the culmination of knowledge that you have accumulated over the course of the semester and should represent your best work. Be mindful of your writing and revise as much as you can to create a solid final product. Only the final products will be collected for grading purposes. All samples should be original works and not revisions of writings that you have done over the course of the semester.

Poetry: (25 points)

Write a poem that makes use of at least four different poetic devices. The subject and style of the poem will be your own choice and should be one page in length. It will be graded using the following rubric:

Use of poetic devices 10 pts.

Structure and meter 5 pts.

Vocabulary / imagery 5 pts.

Explanation of poetic devices* 5 pts.

* Keep in mind that you will be required to include a one-paragraph explanation of your poem that tells me how you have made use of the four poetic devices. Include example lines from your poem in your paragraph for each poetic device that the poem highlights.

Fiction: (25 points)

Write a two-three page short story that spans the entire story arc from exposition to resolution. This story may be double-spaced, but must include all of the following elements of fiction below. Keep in mind that this is a fairly short story, so do not try to make the plot too complicated. Keep it simple but the subject matter is entirely up to you.

Plot Elements (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution) 10 pts.

Character Development (for your main character only) 5 pts.

Dialogue (uses correct structure and has an authentic voice) 5 pts.

Narration and action (strong vocabulary, clear actions, "show don't tell") 5pts.

Screenplay: (25 points)

Write a single scene for a screenplay. The scene that you create does not have to stand alone and may be a part of a larger original work, but any background knowledge necessary to understand the scene should be included in writing. It will be graded mainly on the use of correct structure for the format, film cuing, and dialogue. The final product should be three-four pages in length.

Screenplay formatting 15 pts.

Mise-en-scene cues 5 pts.

Dialogue/Narration 5 pts.
