Book: The Hobbit
Author: J.R.R. Tolkien
Objectives:
Given a fill in the blank worksheet with a word bank, students will fill in the blanks to complete reading comprehensions sentences
on chapter two of The Hobbit by themselves with 80% accuracy.
Materials and Resources:
An overhead projector, copies of the The Hobbit, one transparency worksheet for chapter one, copies for the fill in the blank
worksheet for chapter one and two, and pencils
Anticipatory Set:
Ask students if they read chapters one and two last night and ask them if they think they'll enjoy the book from what they read.
Teaching:
Input On the projector, project the transparency of the worksheet for chapter one and complete it as a class while including
models, guided practice, and independent practice. The students will complete their copies for chapter one as you do.
Modeling Read aloud the first fill in the blank sentence and do a think-aloud (let students know that sentences appear in
sequential order throughout the chapter) to show the students how to select the appropriate word from the word bank.
Guided Practice:
For the second fill in the blank, have a student volunteer to read aloud the sentence.
Then, ask students what would make sense as a proper fill in the blank, and have them justify their answer with information from
chapter one.
Repeat this again for the next two sentences.
For the rest of the assignment on chapter one, have the students finish the assignment as you walk around the room to check
students' work for understanding.
Independent Practice: Assign the chapter two worksheet for students to complete in the remainder of the class and as homework.
Closure: Tell students that doing the worksheet for each chapter helps them understand the chapters and will later benefit them
because they will have notes for later studying.
