CLASS PROCEDURES AND GRADING SYSTEM

Class Procedures and Grading System – Algebra 2 Honors – Mr. Hronek – ghronek@

Tests and Quizzes - (worth 50 to 100 points / approximately 65% of total grade) Tests are announced beforehand, while quizzes may or may not be announced beforehand. Department policies prohibit tests/quizzes leaving the classroom, but they will be reviewed in class. Out of respect for everyone, the room must be silent during exams until all tests have been completed.

Final (Comprehensive) Exam - (worth 150 points / approximately 14% of total grade)

Homework and/or classwork Assignments - (2 or 3 points each / approximately 13% of total grade)

Homework is typically graded on completeness, but occasionally a random problem may be checked for correctness as well. Homework is given almost every night. Each homework assignment should be checked daily for correctness. Assignments may be collected daily. Homework is due the school day after it is given, unless otherwise stated. Sometimes time does not permit me to check homework on a given day; Students are expected to bring all unchecked assignments until they are all checked. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Neatness counts, so graphs and charts should be sharp, clear, and easy to read, especially when displaying data. Most days some time will be given in class to start each assignment. Students will begin assignments when asked. Each assignment must include your full printed name, period, date, the assignment number, the assignment (page number and problems), and all necessary work done in good form. No work means no credit. Problems must be clearly labeled and presented in an orderly fashion

Projects – (points per project will vary / approximately 8% of total grade) Projects are assigned to further the understanding of a topic. This may include constructing a mathematical object, doing a presentation on a mathematical concept, using mathematics in the community, or some other mathematical application.

Extra Credit- Visit Math Club at lunch for 1 point per correct problem (AMC in February does not count). Make sure you sign-in. Other extra credit assignments may be given at the discretion of the teacher, and extra credit opportunities may be cancelled at any time for any reason. There is a maximum of 15 EC points per semester.

Students must maintain a B- by the end of first quarter and at all subsequent grading periods to remain in honors. A grade of C+ or below automatically requires a petition that may or may not be granted. A petition cannot be used in 2 consecutive semesters. Students who level change from Honors to CP, will receive a 5% grade bump.  Please be aware that changing levels/classes depends on space availability in other classes across the curriculum and may require switching the order and teachers of the student’s classes.

Notes and Example Problems – Notes should be taken on a daily basis. All example problems should be worked out as they are given in class. These notes and example problems are not allowed to be used or be out during tests or quizzes. Using any notes or example problems in any way during a test or quiz is considered cheating. This includes any data in your calculator that can be read or referred to. If you are in doubt about whether a program or file in your calculator constitutes cheating, check with me before the test or quiz

Graphing Calculator - The graphing calculator will be an important tool used in Algebra 2CP. The model used for demonstration purposes in class is the Texas Instruments TI-84. Any calculator in the TI-83 or TI-84 family works in a similar fashion. The same cannot be said for other makes and models of calculators. Calculator features and graphing utilities found on cell phones, tablets or other electronic devices will not be permitted in class and cannot be used on tests. Calculators with a CAS (computer algebra system) found on calculators like the TI-Inspire, the TI-89 as well as other makes and models of calculators will also not be permitted on tests. Graphing calculators like the TI-84 are permitted on SATs, ACTs and AP Tests.

Attendance - Simply put, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make up any work or exams you missed.

• If an exam was given the day you return from an absence and covers material presented while you were in class, you will take the exam the day you return.

• If you are only absent the day before a test (review day) or the review and test day, you will take the test on the day you return.

• Extended absences: You have the number of days absent to make up missed work or exams.

• Missed exams will be made-up during class unless prior arrangements have been made.

• If your absence is unexcused, you may not make-up any assignments, including quizzes and tests! Make-up work must be given to me so that you get credit; I will not ask for it. Failure to follow these procedures will result in a grade of zero.

MISCELLANEOUS

• Cell and/or picture phone and/or electronic imaging, communication, and/or recording devices should never be used, “able to be seen”, or heard during class. This includes I-PODS and MP3 players. My classroom will be a music and text messaging “free zone”. "Checking the time", “I have a call from my Mom”, and other excuses are not acceptable. Long story short, if it is electronic and not a calculator, it should not be out during class, unless permission is granted.

• Furthermore, if a cell and/or picture phone and/or electronic imaging, communication, and/or recording device is used or “able to be seen” during a test or quiz, a grade of zero will be earned on that test or quiz.

• Cheating - Cheating is defined as anyone else doing work and you trying to take credit for it, or helping somebody else get credit for work they did not do themselves. This includes, but is not limited to: copying homework from a friend, using unauthorized aides on an exam, looking around the room during an exam, allowing someone to copy, smuggling questions and/or answers from the class, etc. Handling an electronic device (other than an approved calculator) during an exam, whether actually used as a communications device or not, is an instance of academic dishonesty. Cheating will result in you earning a “0” on that assignment/exam. I also follow the school policies regarding cheating; refer to your handbook for these policies.

• DO ALL WORK IN PENCIL

• Tardies - You will be marked tardy if you are not inside the room, fully prepared to begin working, when the bell starts (or should start) ringing.

• Textbooks - You will often need your textbook in class. You must bring your book each day to class unless I say otherwise!

• Participation- I will call on students throughout the period to assist with the learning process. Active participation is required in any discussion or group work. This is a learning experience. We are not all perfect; we will make mistakes, and that is okay.

• Restroom/Locker - If the bathroom pass is available and it is not during the first or last ten minutes of class (school policy) you may go. If this privilege causes disruption, the privilege may be revoked.

• Any of the preceding statements or procedures can be changed if the situation so warrants. No changes will be made without prior notification.
