Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ C- D+ D- grade point*

Carleton uses a 12-point grade system to calculate cumulative grade point averages (CGPA). Here's the guide to covert letter grades or numbers to Carleton's grade point system:

Please note that half credit courses are weighted at 0.5 credits. So when Carleton converts your grade for a half credit course to a grade point, they assign half the value (0.5) of the total Grade point.

For example, if you received a B in Psychology, PSYC 1001 (0.5 credits), then your grade point is recorded as a 4.0 for that half credit (8.0 x 0.5 = 4.0).

Example: Convert your current grades into grade points:

Course

Course 1: History

Course 2: FYSM

79% = B+ 9

Course 3: Law

72% = B-

For admission to most BA programs, if you successfully complete (i.e. pass) 3.0 full credits, you will need a C+ average or a total of 18 grade points.*

*If you've taken courses at Carleton before your ESP year, have other post-secondary education, have failed a course or want into limited enrollment programs, you may have additional or different requirements. You should ask for details at your advising appointment.

Bachelor of Arts programs

You'll need to complete at least 2.0 credits before you can be considered for admission to a program (unless you meet the definition of "mature student"- consult with an Advisor regarding mature student regulations).

The average you require will depend on the number of credits you have completed. Need more credits? Enroll in the summer or return to ESP next year. ESP students will be considered for admission to most BA programs after successful completion of:

Number of credits completed 2.0 full credits (or the equivalent) 2.5 full credits (or the equivalent) 3.0 full credits (or the equivalent) 3.5 full credits (or the equivalent) 4.0 full credits or more

Cumulative GPA required 8.0 (B) or higher 7.00 (B-) or higher 6.00 (C+) or higher 5.00 (C) or higher with a status of Good Standing if admitted (see the APE)

Some B.A programs have higher CGPA requirements Criminology, Geomatics & Global Politics

Some BA programs have additional requirements, such as higher CGPA requirements or prerequisite subject requirements from high

school. For example:

? Bachelor of Arts in Biology (4U Chemistry required)

? Bachelor of Arts in Economics (4U Functions required)

? Bachelor of Humanities

? Bachelor of Journalism (higher gpa required)

? Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management (higher gpa required)

More questions? Talk to an Advisor.

(higher gpa required)

Other non-BA programs may have portfolio requirements (e.g. Bachelor of Social Work), or audition requirements

(Bachelor of Music). Consult an Advisor.

Bachelor of Commerce & International Business

Students who wish to earn admission to a Business major must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered:

? Completion of 4.0 credits listed above (normally 3.0 in fall/winter and 1.0 in early summer) ? An overall minimum CGPA of 8.0 across their ESP/AESP Business Stream courses (with no failed courses) ? A minimum average of 6.5 in any courses included in the major (math and economics)

Bachelor of Engineering

To earn admission to an Engineering program: successfully complete the ESP/AESP Engineering stream: ? An overall minimum GPA of B- 7.0 ? And a core average of 70% (cut-off will vary by program). ? Students must also complete 4U Advanced Physics (Physics may be taken concurrently, min 60%).

Bachelor of Science

? To earn admission to a B.Sc. General: An overall minimum GPA of 6.0 or C+ (67-69%) for admission to a major science degree (3-year program). And must complete their core science and math courses (first-year Chemistry and Math courses) with a minimum of C+ (6.0).

? To earn admission to a B.Sc. Honours: An overall GPA of 7.0 or B- (70-72%) and one of: 4U Biology, Earth and Space Science or Physics (not offered in ESP/AESP, min 60%). And must present an average of B- (7.0) across their core science and math courses (first-year Chemistry and Math courses, plus the additional 4U science credit).

What happens if I fail a course? That means that the number of successfully completed courses has changed. So if you've taken 3.0 credits and you fail a 0.5 credit course--that "F" is factored into your CGPA, but you'll only have successfully completed 2.5 credits. According to the GPA table above, that means you'll need an overall 7.00 CGPA for BA admission, for admission to other degrees, there may be other consequences. If this happens, talk to an advisor about your options.

What happens if I don't get the required average? You may have options depending on your circumstances. a) If you earn below a D- average, you'll be suspended from studies and need to take a year away from study at Carleton. You may appeal to return as a special student after the one year period. b) If you are not suspended, you may: take a summer course(s) to raise your average (sometimes admissions can use a grade from the summer semester for programs that aren't yet full) apply to second year ESP/AESP (attendance & grades count toward your eligibility to return) continue as a special student (with a max. course load of 1.0 credit per term)
