CHEMISTRY I POLICY SHEET

FORENSIC SCIENCE

ACCELERATED FORENSIC SCIENCE

Welcome to CSI at HCTC!

This will no doubt be a challenging but fun class in which you get to apply all of your prior science knowledge.

What am I going to learn?

We are going to learn the real science behind shows like CSI and NCIS. This is a survey class, so we will touch on many different types of forensic investigation.

What should I wear?

This is a professional working environment. Please meet school dress code as specified in the handbook as a minimum. Being well-groomed and modestly dressed are employability skills. Labs: Closed-toe shoes, goggles and lab coat (provided) in addition to other dress code rules.

*Recommended to wear glasses rather than contacts for lab days, but this is not a requirement.

What if I am late?

Being at school on time is an employability skill. Punctuality is very important. The district tardy policy will be followed.

What do I need to bring to class? A positive attitude, a spiral or composition book for lab notebook, three-ring binder, loose leaf paper, graph paper, pencil, pen, and scientific calculator or calculator app on your smart phone, such as RealCalc (free). You may need note cards and other standard school/art supplies from time to time. *Please bring a box of tissues (any kind).

How will my grade be calculated?

• 60% Major, 40% Minor

• Semester exams count 1/7 of semester grade; will include performance of lab skills.

• Grades are available through Skyward Family Access; see district website

What is on my semester exam? Exams are comprehensive over the entire course and based heavily on performing actual forensic skills. (Don’t throw away your papers!)

What if I forget my assignment?

The new EMS ISD Grading and Reporting Handbook requires that late assignments (not due to excused absences) will be penalized as follows:

1 Day Late = Grade recorded will be 85% of grade marked (100(85; 80(68)

2 Days Late = Grade recorded will be 70% of grade marked (100(70; 80(56)

3 Days Late = Grade recorded will be 60% of grade marked (100(60; 80(48)

No late work accepted after 3 school business days and a zero is recorded in the gradebook.

(, page 13-14)

Occasionally, I may offer to drop a daily grade in exchange for something else, such as getting your grade sheet signed by a parent. Occasionally, I will offer a few bonus points for something, too.

What if I am absent?

• It is important that you are present in class every day. Missed work is THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY. You can talk to me and see our class website for information about assignments. (cluehunter.) Extenuating circumstances will be considered on an individual basis. Please discuss with me immediately upon return to class.

• The Grading and Reporting Handbook specifies that while some projects with prior assigned due dates may be due on the first day returning from an absence, most school work is allowed the time absent plus one additional day to be turned in. Extended absences will be dealt with on an individual basis. Student should not expect to make up all grades from a long absence right at the end of a grading period.

What are the guidelines for lab? The lab is a place for serious work. If you are not behaving safely in the lab, you will not be allowed to complete the lab and will receive a grade of zero. Students will pay for damaged or broken lab equipment due to not following safety rules or good lab practices. Student safety is our highest priority and training will begin immediately. Labs will be assessed in a variety of ways including reports, quizzes, report sheets, oral examinations, teacher observation, test questions, etc…

Scientific Professional Community Policies

1. Follow all directions and safety rules. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. (Don’t touch equipment or others’ belongings without asking permission first.)

2. Be prepared.

3. Be respectful of yourself and others.

4. Be on task at all times.

5. Practice academic integrity. If you cheat on a test or quiz, you will receive a zero with no retake.

6. LAB REPORTS MUST BE TYPED INDIVIDUALLY AND SHOULD BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS EVEN IF THEY HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED BY A GROUP. It is not ok to turn in two copies of the same lab report for you and your lab partner just because you worked on it together.

Will I work in groups?

You will often work with others in cooperative learning groups. Research supports this as an effective method for learning, and “teaming" is required as an employability skill for your career success. Group work will be assessed in a variety of ways and will usually include a component of individual grading. It is expected that everyone will contribute in a positive way to the effort.

Be aware that although several students may work together for lab and have the same lab data, each person must individually answer the questions in his or her own words. Working together in a group does not constitute permission to report as a group. You should do your own work and turn it in individually unless otherwise notified. Feel free to consult with your teacher if you have concerns.

What if I need help?

Please come in for tutorials! I am happy to help you! Please make an appointment with me.

Where can I find class information?

I will keep my website updated with information about our class. cluehunter.

How can I get instant updates? (For parents AND students)
