Welcome to 5th Grade

Welcome to 5th Grade!

The team: Miss Slamka, Mrs. Steiner, and Mrs. McCrodden would like to welcome your child to fifth grade.

• My name is Carrie Steiner, and this is my 12th year of teaching.  I live in Strongsville, with my husband, my son, Jacob, and dog, Sugar. This past summer I relaxed and spent time with Jacob. He and I took walks, played in the yard, and relaxed. I really enjoyed bonding with him.

• My name is Erica McCrodden and this is my fifth year of teaching. I previously taught for two year at Nordonia Hills and am beginning my third year at Hinckley. I graduated from the University of Akron in 2004 with my Reading Endorsement and my master’s degree in Literacy. I got married in April of 2005 and have two young Labradors at home.

• My name is Brooke Slamka.  This is will be my third year teaching fifth grade in Hinckley. Before coming to the Highland School district, I taught three years in the Cincinnati area. I spent my summer traveling and visiting my family.

Contacting the Teachers

There are many ways to get in touch with your child’s teacher:

▪ Simply write a note.

▪ Call the office and leave us a message.

▪ Email:  The district website has easy links if you select the Hinckley page.  Below are also the email addresses for 5th grade teachers:

Miss Slamka: MACROBUTTON HtmlResAnchor bslamka@

Mrs. Steiner: MACROBUTTON HtmlResAnchor csteiner@

Mrs. McCrodden: MACROBUTTON HtmlResAnchor emccrodd@

As with any method you choose to use please allow up to 48 hours for a response.  It sometimes takes a teacher a little time to answer your questions due to unforeseen circumstances (absences, meetings, etc). We will respond to your messages.

Assignment Book

Every child has been given an assignment book. Parents, students, and teachers are all responsible for areas of this book. We, the teachers, are responsible for filling out the poster/overhead copy accurately on a daily basis.  We also make sure the students have enough time to fill out their books during switches.  The students are responsible for filling out the book accurately, taking it home, showing it to you, finishing the work assigned, and returning it to school signed.  Parents are responsible for seeing that the work is done and for signing the book. This way everyone knows what is happening everyday in school.

Schedule

This year your child will be departmentalized with all 3 classes. In fifth grade, math will be taught by Miss Slamka, social studies by Mrs. McCrodden, and science by Mrs. Steiner.  All of the language arts will be taught by your child’s homeroom teacher.

Every morning, your child will be engaged in language arts.  In the afternoon, we will switch for math, social studies, and science. The first few days of school, we reviewed what materials will have to be taken from class to class.  Your child will eventually be expected to remember to take all of his/her materials with them to those classrooms.

Grading

As a fifth grade student your child will be expected to do his/her best on all assignments.  Neatness and organization is a must. Below is a copy of the grading scale that will be used:

|100-99 |A+ |

|95 - 98 |A |

|93 - 94 |A- |

|91 - 92 |B+ |

|87 - 90 |B |

|85 - 86 |B- |

|83 - 84 |C+ |

|76 - 82 |C |

|74 - 75 |C- |

|72 - 73 |D+ |

|68 - 71 |D |

|66 - 67 |D- |

|65 - 0 |F |

Your child will be allowed to turn in late homework up to a week before the end of the month or the end of the quarter. Please use the calendar and help your child stay up to date with his/her assignments.

Spelling

We believe that correct spelling is very important in school and life. Your child will be expected to copy a word correctly from their workbook, worksheet, or book in which they are working from.  If they choose not to 1 % point will be deducted from the overall score on that assignment. We appreciate your support.

Sustained Silent Reading: SSR

Hinckley Elementary School will be having sustained silent reading time everyday.  It is extremely important that your child be prepared for this ahead of time.  This means they must have a book to read at their desk.  Last minute trips to the school or class library is not permitted.

 Water Bottles

Your child will be allowed to bring in a water bottle.  Please make sure that the top does NOT have to be screwed on / off to drink.  The sports bottle works the best.  We are also requesting that this bottle only be used for water; please do not send flavored drinks in it. Also remind your child of our restroom policy, because frequent drinking will not equal frequent visits to the restroom.

Trappers

Your child will be using a trapper-keeper this year to help with organization while moving from class to class. Each folder in the trapper will be labeled and used for each subject area.  Please check the folder labeled “Take Home Folder” on a nightly basis because this will hold all information and papers that were sent home that day.

The fifth grade team looks forward to working with your child this year.  With your assistance and support we will have a successful and happy year.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.  You may also expect to see our monthly newsletter around the 15th of every month for updates and other news.

Sincerely,

Miss Slamka

Mrs. Steiner

Mrs. McCrodden
