Introduction to the tools and techniques of structured analysis: data flow diagrams, data dictionaries, process specification. System life cycle through the structured system specifications. Tools and techniques of structured design, including structure charts, coupling, cohesion, transform analysis, transaction analysis, balanced systems, packaging, design heuristics

Course Organization:

Activities during class time will focus primarily on strengthening your understanding of the course material and rather than on my lecturing about this material. I have set aside in the schedule for group work. Since I will be doing less presentation of text-available material in class, it is absolutely necessary that you read the assigned chapters before the material is covered in class. If it becomes clear that a significant portion of the class is not reading the assigned material, I will give unannounced closed-book quizzes to provide incentive.

Grading:

Individual Assignments 85% of total grade

Homework & Quizzes 15% of individual grade (12.75% of total)

2. All homework is due at the start of class on the date specified in the assignment. 10% per day late will be deducted from late homework assignments; weekends will count as one day. No assignment will be accepted more than one week after its scheduled due date, or after it has been discussed in class, whichever occurs first.

3. Part of your grade on all homework assignments depends on the professional quality of your work. An assignment which is prepared on scrap paper or pages torn from a notebook, or which looks like it was prepared a few minutes before class, will not be accepted. All work must have a cover page with Lab/Project #, Name(S), Due Date, Submit date and be either stapled or have a binder clip.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Regarding Individual Assignments:

I understand that students will frequently discuss homework assignments together; obviously, to a certain extent I encourage this discussion. In general, helping one another with regard to the technique for solving a problem. However, it must be understood that individual homework assignments should represent the effort of the student turning in the assignment. Therefore, should two or more students turn in the same solution to an individual assignment (or what I judge to be the same solution) I will consider this to be cheating and will grade the papers accordingly, all students involved will automatically receive a grade of F for the course!
