Special Area Grading Scale and Procedures

4th & 5th Grade Special Area Grading Policy

In Special Area classes, students will be given at least one grade daily. Special Area teachers will be using the same grading scale as the classroom teachers. The grades given for each class will be for participation, written work, and Assessments. Every grade will be considered on a 100 point scale. If the student is absent, the participation grade will not count against them; however, any graded work will be sent home to be made up with the same guidelines as regular class work. Extra credit options will be available on an individual basis.

Music grading policy: The student will be held accountable in two areas. Participation is the most important part of music class and it will be scored in the following ways- Does the student participate in all movement and group activities? Is the student demonstrating skills in music and staying on task? Are students treating all materials and instruments with care? The student will be scored on a 10 point scale daily for participation. The second form of assessment will be written work. There will be times when students are required to take notes, do a worksheet or take a quiz. All tested information is a part of the Kentucky Core Content and will be taught and practiced in class. Daily written activities will be based on a 10 point scale but all quizzes will be on a 100 point scale. This just makes it easier for the students to understand how they performed on a quiz. All students are expected to come to class with good behavior and a positive can-do attitude.

4th and 5th grade scores are weighted with Participation = 60%, Class activities and quizzes = 40%

Art grading policy: Participation will be scored in the following ways- does the student demonstrate knowledge of the style or media being taught through their artwork, did the student attempt to model the style or media that was taught, did the student clean up his/her mess, was the student on task during the lesson and creative time? Since abilities greatly differ in the area of art, the students are not graded on how talented they are in the area, but on the effort that was given. Graded work will be in the form of small quizzes, tests, ORQ’s, and some art projects.

P.E. grading policy: Students will be learning about movement, sport-based skills and dance. Since abilities greatly differ in the area of physical education and dance, the students are not graded on how talented they are in the area, but on the effort that he/she shows/gives. Students will receive a numerical grade in the following three areas: Participation, Class work, and Assessments. Participation will count for 10 points/class period (Ex: is the student engaged in the lesson, is she/he following directions, is he/she on task and not being disruptive, and does the student demonstrate knowledge of the lesson being taught). In order to get full credit they must be wearing the proper footwear (tennis shoes, crocks or sandals with rubber bottoms and strap on the back are acceptable. Flip flops, dress shoes, or slick bottom shoes are not acceptable due to the Safety hazard those types of shoes pose). Class work will include both written assignments as well as performance based assignments. Assessments will also be written and performance based.

5th grade scores are weighted with Participation = 40%, Class work = 40%, and Assessment = 20% of the nine weeks grade.

4th grade scores are weighted with Participation = 50%, Class work = 40%, and Assessment = 10% of the nine weeks grade.

Please refer to the monthly calendar sent home at the beginning of each month to help your student remember when he/she has PE.
