Purpose

One of the most important things that you should take from this class is that writing is a process. You should always engage in the process of revision. Revision is an active process that involves critical thinking, cutting, rearranging, adding, and developing. Any paper that has not undergone a rigorous revision process is not your best work. In this portfolio, you will analyze your previous work, considering both content and mechanical issues. This is your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned this semester.

Portfolio Sections

Section 1

Select the paper on which you earned the lowest grade or select any paper on which you earned a grade below 70. Write a two-page reflection on that paper. Discuss what worked well in the paper. I expect you to critically think about and explain why that worked well. Most importantly, I want you to think critically about and explain what did not work well in the paper. You should analyze all parts of the paper. Your analysis should include but not be limited to your introduction, conclusion, structure, use of evidence, analysis of evidence, and grammar. Each reflection should be in MLA format, but you should not include the header material.

Section 2

Revise the paper that you selected for Section 1. This should be a substantial revision of the previous assignment, not just a topical revision that reflects surface level changes. This means that you should look beyond the items noted in the graded version. All revised papers should be typed. Students will need to submit the graded original paper with the revision.

Section 3 and Section 4

In these two sections, type a detailed post-paper reflection. This reflection will resemble the reflection that you did in section one. You should a write one-page reflections of each of your remaining papers. In those reflections, you should discuss what you learned from the assignment about the topic, about researching, about and writing. You should also discuss what worked well in the paper and what needs to be revised in the paper. Your analysis may include discussion about your introduction, conclusion, structure, use of evidence, analysis of evidence, and grammar. Place each graded paper with its reflection in separate folder sections. Each reflection should be in MLA format, but you should not include the header material.

Section 5

Pick the top three grammar issues that are evident throughout your papers. Do research on each grammar issue. I expect you to look at two sources per grammar issue. Find three examples of each grammatical error from your papers. In one document, define each grammar issue in your own words. Underneath each definition, write out the grammatically incorrect sentences that correspond to that specific definition. After each grammatically incorrect sentence, write a revised sentence that corrects that error. At the end of the document, create a works consulted page. You should have a total of nine incorrect sentences paired with their corrected counterpart.

Portfolio Organization

Five points will be deducted from the grade if the portfolio does not meet the organizational guidelines and if it is not in the correct folder. You are expected to use dividers that are labeled alphabetically. Points will also be deducted for missing parts of this portfolio.

Coversheet

You will have a title page. See the example below. This should be the first document in the folder

Divider A

Behind this divider, insert Section 1 material.

Divider B

Behind this divider, insert Section 2 material with the old graded paper

Divider C

Behind this divider, insert Section 3 material. This includes both the reflection and the graded paper.

Divider D

Behind this divider, insert Section 4 material. This includes both the reflection and the graded paper.

Divider E

Behind this divider, insert Section 5 material.

Things to Remember

This portfolio is your final exam. You should treat this as the final opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned this semester. You should not treat any part of this assignment as though it is insignificant. You should put the same care into your revisions, reflections, and grammar research/revision as you would in any other major assignment. Don’t phone this in! Remember that this portfolio is worth 25% of your grade. Late portfolios will not be accepted.
