The Future of Energy: Global Partners,

Economics and Strategy

"Energy" is a vast topic to tackle in a 4-part series! And its issues continually -- and rapidly -- evolve. This transition is the focus of our series, through a neutral look at its economics, geopolitical implications and current and future strategies.

We begin with information about energy changes with an acclaimed documentary viewed already by over 3 million people around the world. We continue with experts who have researched and implemented energy related projects on local, national, and global stages.

They will engage us in a discussion about China and energy; help us re-imagine the role of energy in the economy, and finally discuss an energy strategy for our country.

Hear President Jimmy Carter in an interactive webcast!

CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections is a national day of programming on China involving over 70 cities throughout the United States. Our participation both in this webcast AND with hosting our own nationally known expert here in Grand Rapids (see below) has been underwritten by a grant by the National Committee on U.S. ? China Relations (New York) to our Council.

President Jimmy Carter will have a conversation on current issues regarding the China/US relationship with Stephen Orlins, President of the National Committee on U.S. China Relations.

In keeping with the "Future of Energy" series theme, we have arranged with China Town Hall to host Dr. Terry Cooke, founder of the China Partnership of Greater Philadelphia, in-person. He will talk on "The U.S. China Clean Energy Relationship."

President Carter's webcast presentation, including the interactive Q&A, is broadcast live from 7:00 PM to 7:45 PM ET. Immediately following the webcast, Dr. Cooke speaks with us in-person until approximately 8:30 PM (includes Q&A).

Wednesday, October 8

"SWITCH." An energy project documentary.

This acclaimed "agenda-free" energy documentary shows how every energy resource -- fossil, nuclear and renewable -- is undergoing profound changes.

We're gradually shifting from coal and oil to the energies of tomorrow. This sweeping transition is the subject of Switch. But rather than advocate for how it should happen, Switch travels the world to discover how it most likely will happen. Switch also strives to change the energy conversation so we can move away from all the polarization and rhetoric. The film focuses on practical realities and encourages a balanced understanding. The documentary ends by showing how we will change the way we use energy.

CHINA Town Hall with President Jimmy Carter via interactive webcast and, in-person, Dr. Terry Cooke of the China Partnership of Greater Philadelphia

China's rapid development and Sino-American relations have a direct impact on the lives of just about everyone in the United States. From the race for economic superiority to competition and collaboration on energy in the future, what's ahead with China in relation to the U.S.? As part of a grant from the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, former President Jimmy Carter, will live-stream in to deliver the keynote address.

Following President Carter, Dr. Terry Cooke, founder of the China Partnership of Greater Philadelphia, joins us in-person for a discussion on the U.S.-China clean energy relationship (do we collaborate or compete?).

NOTE LOCATION CHANGE: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, 303 Pearl St, NW Downtown Grand Rapids THIS EVENT IS FREE. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. NO RESERVATIONS NEEDED. FREE PARKING.

Thursday, October 23

"Running the Engine: How Energy Propels the Economy" with Dr. Matthew Heun, Professor of Engineering, Calvin College

According to the predominant economic metaphor of our time, energy provides fuel for the economic engine. This lecture with Dr. Heun helps us re-imagine the role of energy in the economy, leads to fresh insights about its importance, and contextualizes recent developments in both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. He discusses the emerging research about the connections among energy, the economy, and the biosphere.

Thursday, October 30

"Energy Security as a Grand Strategy" with Dr. Sheila Ronis, National Defense University Workshop Facilitator

In her third visit with us, Dr. Sheila Ronis, a security consultant to the highest levels of US government, brings the series full-circle with the important discussion about a comprehensive national energy policy and its national security implications.

How can the Nation plan in a proactive sense to be ready for the future, let alone shape one, without such a framework?" Dr. Ronis, Director of the Center for Complex and Strategic Decisions at Walsh College, presents "Lessons from the National Defense University's workshop: Energy Security as a Grand Strategy," that she helped organize in Washington, D.C. Her Energy Scenario in 2040 will be shared along with steps toward an Energy Security Grand Strategy for the United States.
